CNN —More than 800 years after her birth, Joan of Arc — a patron saint of France — remains an object of not just historical, but cultural fascination. Humble beginningsOne of five children in a peasant family in Domrémy, in north-eastern France, Joan was born in the year 1412. The Amazonian image of Joan of Arc in armor is perhaps the most recurrent one in popular culture, inspiring thousands, if not hundreds and thousands, of similar depictions. It also provided the inspiration for Carl Theodore Dreyer’s silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) starring Renée Jeanne Falconetti. New York CNN —Next month’s presidential election could make America’s hostile media climate even worse for journalists. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said the “corrosive political environment” has intensified safety concerns for journalists – forcing newsrooms to conduct safety assessments, evaluate online threats, and hire extra security.

The Congressional Gold Medal was presented to the families of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Christine Darden at the US Capitol. The Black women hired worked in a segregated unit of female mathematicians at what is now NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 – the nation’s highest civilian honor. Vaughan rose to become NASA’s first Black supervisor and Jackson was NASA’s first Black female engineer.

Manchin, a conservative Democrat of West Virgina, has introduced a bill to speed fossil fuel and renewable energy projects that calls on the administration to approve Equitrans Midstream Corp's (ETRN.N) $6.6 billion Mountain Valley pipeline. The Biden administration has supported Manchin's bill as it would help renewable energy companies reap the benefit of billions of dollars of tax credits contained in last year's Inflation Reduction Act.
