CNN —US tennis star Coco Gauff stormed to victory in the China Open final on Sunday, sweeping past Karolina Muchová 6-1 6-3. The straight-sets victory makes the 20-year-old the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams back in 2013 – she now has eight WTA titles to her name. Gauff also made WTA history in the process, becoming the first woman to win her first seven hard-court finals in the Open era. It was an impressive performance from Gauff who wasted no time in stamping her authority on the final as she wrapped up the first-set in 30 minutes, a remarkable feat given Muchová’s recent run. Gauff will play the Wuhan Open next, as she continues to rise up the rankings once again.

CNN —Thursday’s US Open women’s semifinal between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova was halted in the second set after what appeared to be protesters in the crowd disrupted play in New York. Charles Krupa/APGauff and Muchova had left the court during the pause, then returned and play eventually resumed after more than a 45-minute delay. Four protesters were involved, and three of them “were escorted out of the stadium without further incident,” according to a statement from the US Tennis Association on Thursday night. USTA executive Stacey Allaster told the ESPN broadcast: “There’s no doubt in a 24,000-seat stadium, hopefully, people don’t get ideas. The U.S. Open semifinal match on Thursday night between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova was delayed by 49 minutes early in the second set by four environmental protesters in the upper levels of Arthur Ashe Stadium who were calling for an end to fossil fuels. The protest confused fans, television commentators and the players themselves, who were trying to understand what the group was protesting and why the match had been delayed so long. As stadium security tried to remove the protesters from the stadium, at least 10 New York City police officers were seen surrounding the disturbance in the upper level. Chris Widmaier, a spokesman for the United States Tennis Association, which hosts the U.S. Open, said after the match that three of the four protesters were escorted out of the stadium without any issues. But police officers and medical personnel were brought in to safely remove the fourth protester who had affixed his feet to the ground with some sort of product, Widmaier said.
