The reality is that both parties learn lessons from losing elections that apply only in the short term — say, from one presidential election to the next midterm or from one midterm to the next presidential election. Not anymore — it’s why Democrats usually overperform in special elections, with more devoted “every election” voters right now. Meanwhile, in the non-battlegrounds, which were more affected by the basic “mood music” of the election, Democrats were shellacked. The seeds of discontent with this version of the Democratic Party can be traced back a decade to Obama’s decision to anoint Hillary Clinton as his successor. Trump even muddled the most basic attack on connecting Harris to Biden, claiming at one point that Biden "hates" his own vice president. Trump, an acolyte of Roy Cohn, forgot the controversial lawyer's most famous adage to "Attack, Attack, Attack" when he needed it the most. And as he did, all night, Trump took the bait, spending the first part of his rebuttal defending the money his father gave him. Harris continues to have a slight lead in the major national polling averages, but the race remains even closer in key swing states. After reversing himself many times, Trump declared before the weekend that he would not debate Harris again.

CNN —The Almighty won’t be standing on stage alongside Joe Biden on Thursday night. Biden’s campaign laid the groundwork for the Atlanta showdown hosted by CNN in a weekend memo. If Trump rants and vents his 2020 election lies on Thursday, he will play into Biden’s hands. That could avoid the mayhem of the first Trump v. Biden debate in 2020. His campaign has spent days trying to roll back his expectations of Biden as a doddering, elderly president who can’t string two words together.

The debate between President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump this week will be the highest-stakes moment of their rematch, plunging two presidents into an extraordinarily early confrontation before a divided and angry nation. For Mr. Biden, the debate in Atlanta offers an opportunity to remind voters of the chaos of his predecessor’s leadership, his criminal convictions and to warn of an even darker future should he win a second term. For Mr. Trump, it’s a chance to make his case that America has grown more expensive, weaker and more dangerous under his successor. A notable misstep — a physical stumble, a mental lapse or a barrage of too-personal insults — could reverberate for months, because of the unusually long period until they meet again for the second debate in September. “This is a big inflection point,” said Karl Rove, a leading Republican strategist who guided George W. Bush’s two successful presidential runs.

Trump's campaign did not define what small donors mean, but it typically refers to Americans who donate $200 or less. It's not a surprise that the day provided a major boost to Trump's fundraising. Last month, Trump and Republicans outraised President Joe Biden and Democrats. Senate Republicans' campaign arm said it had its biggest fundraising day of the cycle, raising $360,000 online.

But the idea of simply placing Kennedy atop the Libertarian Party ticket to marry his momentum with their organization left Kennedy with an embarrassing loss at the Libertarian Party convention in Washington. About half – 51% – said they would support Trump in a two-way matchup, compared with 37% who said they would pick Biden. The last third-party candidate to win a state and get Electoral Votes was George Wallace, who won Southern states in 1968. The only third-party candidate to outperform a major party candidate was former President Teddy Roosevelt, who outpolled Republicans after he failed to get their nomination in 1912 and then ran as a third-party candidate. But rather than focus on the relatively few people who turn out for a third-party candidate, why not look at the large number of people who don’t take part in elections at all?

Trump’s advisers insist that doesn’t mean he’s taking South Carolina for granted. But we see this as a done deal,” a senior Trump adviser told CNN, referring specifically to South Carolina. Earlier this month, the Trump campaign held two press conferences featuring a series of his top South Carolina surrogates. “Nikki is persona non grata at this point,” Justin Evans, Trump’s director of special projects in South Carolina, told CNN. Last week, as Israel continued its military response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack, its political goals — and potential endgame — remained a source of huge controversy. Join us on Twitter and Facebook“Take, for example, the Israel Defense Forces strike on Gaza’s Jabalya refugee camp on Tuesday. “Following the horrific massacre in Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7, I felt an intense, relentless grief. Though Perry wanted to escape Chandler, he kept him around, because heaven forbid anyone saw what he was hiding.”

Images: Reuters/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyThe behavior of the front-running Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns is perplexing. Neither Joe Biden’s surrogates nor Donald Trump seems to know the value of restraint. First there’s the rhetorical hell Democrats rained down on Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips after he announced he’s running in the New Hampshire presidential primary. Mr. Phillips believes that Mr. Biden is too old and that Democrats will lose the White House unless they nominate a younger leader.

“We want the entire MAGA movement to understand that what’s going on in Texas is not just about Texas,” Mr. Bannon told his podcast audience this month. Yet those conservative credentials may not be enough to help Mr. Paxton survive what promises to be the most significant test he has faced. A well-funded political action committee, Defend Texas Liberty, has begun targeting some Republican members of the Texas House who voted to impeach Mr. Paxton. Mr. Abbott has not commented on Mr. Paxton’s impeachment. Mr. Paxton won handily and went on to easily win a third term in the November election.

With television ads and text messages, direct mail and billboards, supporters of the embattled Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton, have embarked on an escalating campaign of political pressure, backed by hard-right billionaires, aimed at trying to sway the outcome of Mr. Paxton’s upcoming impeachment trial. The targets of their efforts are narrow: the 19 Republican members of the State Senate who will act as jurors in the trial, set to begin on Tuesday, and decide whether allegations of corruption and abuse of power are serious enough to warrant permanently removing and barring Mr. Paxton from office. But the effort to save Mr. Paxton, who is seen by many hard-core conservatives as their legal standard-bearer, is also the latest proxy in the broader fight over the future direction of the party, both in Texas and nationally. It has drawn in a range of conservative figures on both sides, with Rick Perry, the former Texas governor, and Karl Rove, the political consultant to former President George W. Bush, arguing in support of the impeachment process, and Steve Bannon, the former Trump political adviser, lampooning it as a Democrat-inspired witch hunt.
