That's in part because along with the hardware and software, Nvidia offers the engineers and relationships with both end-users and research organizations, which could stunt competitor plans from the get-go, Freund explained . Because so many engineers are already using Nvidia's software, some companies may face resistance if attempting to transition to a new language, explained Pieran Maru, an investment analyst at global asset management firm GAM Investments.
Synopsys spreads AI throughout its chip design tools

Synopsys first released an AI tool for one part of the chip design process three years ago, and with customers like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) and ST Microelectronics (STM.DE) using the system. The tools Synopsys released Wednesday at its annual user conference in Santa Clara, California, spread much further across the chip design process. Synopsys is in a race with Cadence Design Systems (CDNS.O), its largest competitor, to add AI to chip design software. While some of the Synopsys tools released Wednesday are catching up to Cadence, Karl Freund, principal analyst with Cambrian AI research, said Synopsys is ahead, with more than 100 chips by customers using its AI tools coming to market. "I think they'll probably be at 1,000 (completed chip designs) by the end of the year."
OAKLAND, California, March 28 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence chip startup Cerebras Systems on Tuesday said it released open source ChatGPT-like models for the research and business community to use for free in an effort to foster more collaboration. Silicon Valley-based Cerebras released seven models all trained on its AI supercomputer called Andromeda, including smaller 111 million parameter language models to a larger 13 billion parameter model. Cerebras said the smaller models can be deployed on phones or smart speakers while the bigger ones run on PCs or servers, although complex tasks like large passage summarization require larger models. Most of the AI models today are trained on Nvidia Corp's (NVDA.O) chips, but more and more startups like Cerebras are trying to take share in that market. The models trained on Cerebras machines can also be used on Nvidia systems for further training or customization, said Feldman.
Now, the United States is going after China's advanced computing and supercomputer industry. The provision called the foreign direct product rule, or FDPR, was first introduced in 1959 to control trading of U.S. technologies. So they expanded the FDPR to control trade of chips made using U.S. technology or tools. The latest move would ban any semiconductor manufacturing firm that uses American tools - which most do - from selling advanced chips to China, said Karl Freund, a chip consultant at Cambrian AI who watches the supercomputing space. In that case, it could take China five to 10 years to catch up to today's technology, he added.
