An Arkansas police officer who was caught on video beating a handcuffed inmate in the back of a patrol car has been fired and his case has been referred to prosecutors, the police chief said. Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott fired Joseph Harris on Friday, a day after he was caught on his patrol car video elbowing and punching the handcuffed man and then slamming the car door on his head after the man choked himself with a seatbelt. He was apprehended by Harris and was being returned to the county jail when the assault occurred, Elliott said. Two special prosecutors said Monday they will file a criminal obstruction of justice charge against a former Kansas police chief who directed warrant searches of a publisher and his newsroom over its retrieval of public information. As of Monday, prosecutors hadn't filed any criminal charges against former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody. It was not immediately clear if they would be seeking a felony or misdemeanor charge against Cody. The special prosecutors are working with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which stepped in at the request of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. “The findings will be incorporated into charges which will be sought in Marion County District Court,” the report said.

A top executive at Tyson Foods who is a fourth-generation member of the Tyson family business was suspended on Thursday after he was charged with driving while intoxicated, the company said in a statement. John Randal Tyson, 34, the company’s chief financial officer and a great-grandson of Tyson’s founder, was arrested in Fayetteville, Ark., by the University of Arkansas Police Department and booked at the Washington County jail at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, jail records show. It was the second time in less than two years that Mr. Tyson had been charged with an alcohol-related offense. Mr. Tyson, whose father is Tyson’s chairman, was named the company’s chief financial officer in September 2022. He had been in his position just over a month when he was arrested in November 2022, after a woman called the police to report that she had returned to her home in Fayetteville to find him asleep in her bed, The Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.
