Fortesa Latifi went back to working only one week after giving birth and felt intensely guilty. AdvertisementI didn't want to soak up every minute of 'leave'As a contractor and freelance writer, my maternity leave wasn't a given. Allison Venditti, the founder of Moms at Work, an organization for working moms, said leaving maternity leave early isn't uncommon. "The most important thing, I think, is for people to have choice — choice in how they approach work and family, choice to go back to work early, choice to take more time off," Venditti said. We deserve federally mandated maternity leave; it's truly barbaric that we are one of only six countries without guaranteed paid maternity leave.

Novi, Michigan CNN —Former President Donald Trump on Saturday invited several Muslim leaders onstage with him at a campaign rally in Michigan as he courts Arab American and Muslim voters disillusioned or angry over US policy on Israel and Gaza in the critical battleground state. Disputes across the country are brewing over the role of local election boards and how much power they have to question – or even throw out – election results. In Georgia, for instance, Trump-backed members of the state election board recently passed controversial rules that could allow local election boards responsible for certifying results to conduct investigations that threaten to delay certification. One of the Georgia rules, the “Reasonable Inquiry Rule,” would allow election officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results. The petitioners in the case argue that the rule would give partisan board members a wide ability to cast doubt on, or even reject, election results. In some cases, the threat of legal action has been enough to deter officials from pursuing challenges to the certification process.

Nearly 30 GOP members were cited as part of the new "Republicans for Harris" initiative launched Sunday. These include Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary under Trump, and national security official Olivia Troye — who worked as Vice President Mike Pence's national security advisor. By publicly defecting on the Republican presidential nominee, these officials leave a target on their back for attacks from Trump. That statistical dead-heat is why the Harris campaign is targeting undecided Republicans within who may be persuadable against their party's nominee. "Vice President Harris and our campaign are working overtime to earn the support of my fellow Republicans who care about defending democracy and restoring decency," he added.

For more than half a century, the handbook for how developing countries can grow rich hasn’t changed much: Move subsistence farmers into manufacturing jobs, and then sell what they produce to the rest of the world. The recipe — customized in varying ways by Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and China — has produced the most potent engine the world has ever known for generating economic growth. It has helped lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, create jobs and raise standards of living. And with that, doubts are growing about whether industrialization can still deliver the miracle growth it once did. For developing countries, which contain 85 percent of the globe’s population — 6.8 billion people — the implications are profound.

The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it had agreed to provide a $1.52 billion loan guarantee to help a company restart a nuclear power plant in Michigan — the latest step in the government’s effort to revive the nation’s reactors. The loan guarantee is conditional on the facility receiving regulatory approvals and fulfilling other requirements. But many of the country’s nuclear reactors, including the Palisades plant, are at or near the end of their lives and need major upgrades. And few U.S. companies have built new nuclear plants in recent decades because doing so is incredibly expensive and time consuming. Holtec bought the Palisades plant in 2022 in order to close the facility but later campaigned to reopen the plant with the backing of the Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump won the Michigan GOP presidential primary on Tuesday, according to multiple outlets, continuing his march to the party's nomination ahead of Super Tuesday. Since January, Trump has emerged victorious in the Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, Nevada caucuses, and South Carolina primary. But the GOP electorate remains enamored with the former president, judging by his track record in the earlier contests. Trump narrowly won Michigan in the 2016 general election, besting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a state that until that year had backed every Democratic presidential nominee since 1992. The Republican made significant inroads with working-class voters in suburban Detroit and rural voters across the state.

Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Monday that prohibits individuals convicted of a misdemeanor related to domestic violence from possessing firearms for at least an eight-year-period. State law currently includes firearm restrictions for those with felonies related to domestic abuse, but no law had existed for misdemeanor domestic violence. The overhauled gun laws follow two deadly mass school shootings that happened in Michigan within a 14-month period. Federal law already prohibits those charged with felonies or misdemeanors related to domestic violence from purchasing or possessing a gun. Guns were used in more than half, 57%, of those killings in 2020, a year that saw an overall increase in domestic violence during the coronavirus pandemic.

A merciful evening breeze kicked up, swatting away the Arkansas heat and giving wing to the melodies coming from two of the gazebos in the grassy park. In the larger one, a dozen people were playing the last strains of “Barbry Allen” on fiddles, mandolins, guitars, a stand-up bass, dulcimers, banjos and even a dulci-banjo.
