North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday toward its east coast, South Korea and Japan said, days after Pyongyang unveiled a uranium enrichment facility and vowed to beef up its nuclear arsenal. “We strongly condemn North Korea’s missile launch as a clear provocation that seriously threatens the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,” the JCS said in a statement, vowing overwhelming responses to any further provocations. About 30 minutes after its first missile notice, Japan’s coast guard said North Korea fired another ballistic missile. The North fired several short-range ballistic missiles last Thursday, the first such launch in more than two months, which it later described as a test of a new 600-mm multiple launch rocket system. South Korea’s JCS has said the launch might have been to test the weapons for export to Russia, amid intensifying military cooperation between the two countries.

SEOUL, Feb 22 (Reuters) - North Korea's official newspaper said on Wednesday that relying on external aid to cope with food shortages would be equal to taking "poisoned candy", urging economic self-reliance despite deepening hardships amid sanctions and coronavirus lockdowns. Most U.N. agencies and Western relief groups have since left North Korea, with China remaining one of the few sources of external food assistance. "It is a mistake to try to boost the economy by accepting and eating this poisoned candy," the commentary said. "Food production dropped from last year, and there is a possibility of distribution issues due to a change in their food supply and distribution policy," a ministry official told reporters. Unification Minister Kwon Young-se has said Pyongyang had asked the U.N. food agency, the World Food Programme, to provide support but there was no progress because of differences over monitoring issues.

SEOUL—North Korea fired one long-range and two short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday, including a missile that triggered emergency warnings for Japanese citizens in northern prefectures to seek shelter, Seoul and Tokyo officials said. A long-range ballistic missile was fired from the Sunan area in the outskirts of Pyongyang at around 7:40 a.m. local time, Seoul’s military said. Then, at 8:39 a.m., two more short-range ballistic missiles were fired from Kaechon, north of Pyongyang. The distance flown by the missiles wasn’t immediately released by Seoul officials.
