Where Can Men Go to Become Better Men?
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( Joseph Bernstein | Kadar R. Small | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a cloudy afternoon in May, a dozen strangers descended a tree-lined hill in the Catskills, one by one. They had just relinquished their phones, and the only sound they could hear was the distant beat of a drum. But they hoped that somehow they would emerge better, more fulfilled men. At the bottom of the hill, they entered a huge frame tent, bare except for carpets, chairs and space heaters. A circle of about 25 more men, all of whom had already been through the same process, or a very similar one, welcomed them.

Getting Dressed with Beenslackin

A fit pic provocateur, full-time flaneur and occasional stylist, Beenslackin, 24, was born Menelik Demissie in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and moved to Brookline, Mass. Over the last three years, he’s made a name as a street-level avant-gardist, dressing in chaotically ecstatic single-designer outfits (Rick Owens, Margiela, Louis Vuitton and, most recently, Balenciaga and Vetements) with ease, confidence and, crucially, a lack of preciousness. His natural gift with unnatural silhouettes has earned the admiration of Lil Uzi Vert among others, and lately he’s been extending his experimentation to the body itself. You can find him stomping around downtown, pant hems dragging and decaying behind him, sometimes cradling his tiny dog, Keiko. This interview has been edited and condensed.

Scientists found that male rhesus monkeys have sex more frequently with other males than females. This behavior could provide the monkeys with an evolutionary edge over heterosexual counterparts. The researchers reported 72% of the 236 male monkeys either mounted, or were mounted, by other males, whereas only 46% participated in heterosexual sex. Moreover, these male monkeys weren't strictly homosexual. Gay sex in male monkeys is partially heritableBy using genetic tests and family trees, they found that same sex behavior was 6.4% heritable.

Horacio Villalobos | Getty ImagesLISBON, Portugal — Once high-flying tech unicorns are now having their wings clipped as the era of easy money comes to an end. Rising cost of capitalPrivate tech company valuations are under immense pressure amid rising interest rates, high inflation and the prospect of a global economic downturn. "What we've seen in the last few years was a cost of money that was 0," Pousaz said. Pousaz said investors are yet to find a "floor" for determining how much the cost of capital will rise. 'An entire industry got ahead of its skis'A common topic of conversation at Web Summit was the relentless wave of layoffs hitting major tech companies.
