CNN —For cancer patients, the hair loss that may come with treatment can be hard to deal with. With some types of the disease, such as breast cancer, hair loss can occur in 99.9% of chemotherapy patients. The cost to insurers is projected to be around $1,700 per helmet; in comparison, a course of scalp cooling treatment typically costs between $1,500 and $3,000. Changing the experience of chemoAccording to Andrea Smith, nurse leader at Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Breast and Imaging Center, a cancer treatment center in New York City, the fear of hair loss affects treatment decisions. Whatever the method, avoiding hair loss is a “game-changer” for cancer treatment, Smith added.

The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Kisqali, a drug for metastatic breast cancer, to also treat patients with earlier stages of the disease, drugmaker Novartis said Tuesday. The approval means that tens of thousands of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will have access to a medication that can help prevent their cancer from coming back. The expanded approval is for patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, the most common form of the disease. It comes as rates of breast cancer are increasing in younger women: From 2000 to 2019, rates of breast cancer in women ages 20 to 49 increased by 15.6% according to a study published earlier this year in JAMA Network Open. “You’re always going to be faced with the fact every single day that you have had breast cancer,” she said.

“The second reason that breast density is important is because having dense breast tissue raises a woman’s level of risk of developing breast cancer,” Feigin said. Breast cancer survivor JoAnn Pushkin, 64, has advocated for more than a decade that there be a national requirement for women to be notified of their breast density. Now I have lymphedema, and all because it was detected at that later stage,” said Pushkin, who has testified before the FDA about breast density and co-created the website DenseBreast-info.org, which features resources on breast density. The new FDA changes require facilities to provide patients with information about their breast density and include specific language in the mammogram result letter to explain how breast density can influence the accuracy of a mammogram. A study published in 2022 found that the breast cancer death rate dropped by 43% within three decades, from 1989 to 2020, translating to 460,000 fewer breast cancer deaths during that time.

The AI model is training on an unprecedented amount of data that includes billions of images, according to a release . Paige also built an AI model that can help pathologists identify breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer when it appears on the screen. But in order to expand its operations and build an AI tool that can identify more cancer types, Paige turned to Microsoft for help. Over the past year and a half, Paige has been using Microsoft's cloud storage and supercomputing infrastructure to build an advanced new AI model.
