7 Notre Dame kicked off about 20 hours late, following a one-man attack on pedestrians in the French Quarter. Wednesday's attack prompted the Sugar Bowl's postponement with local law enforcement resources devoted to the crime scene, less than a mile from the Sugar Bowl's Superdome site. The deadly onslaught raised questions about future high-profile events in New Orleans, most notably the Super Bowl, which is set for Feb. 9 at the Superdome. The Bourbon Street attack hasn't shaken the NFL's belief in New Orleans as a Super Bowl host city. The league, in statement on Wednesday, said it remains "confident attendees will have a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl experience" in 5 1/2 weeks.

A heavy police and FBI presence blocks off the French Quarter near Bourbon Street in New Orleans late Wednesday morning after a terrorist attack. Emily Kask / AFP - Getty ImagesAuthorities have cited ISIS’ branch in Afghanistan, known as ISIS-K, as a particular danger. “While we don’t know the extent of ISIS involvement yet, this was either inspired by the group or directed from abroad,” Clarke said. In November 2016, authorities said, ISIS propaganda inspired a Somali refugee to drive a car into a crowd at Ohio State University and then stab students trying to help those hit by his car. Western intelligence agencies have generally managed to counter the threat posed by the group, Zelin told NBC News.

ISIS is far from moribund, even if it is now a loosely linked network rather than a self-declared caliphate controlling sizeable cities. There is also the perennial concern among Western security services that individuals inspired by ISIS will launch low-tech attacks – such as stabbings, shootings and driving vehicles into crowds. Events in the Middle East have pushed already radicalized individuals to violence, according to Rita Katz, executive director of SITE Intelligence, a non-governmental organization that monitors terror groups,. Syrian vacuumThe US is concerned that should a security vacuum emerge in Syria, ISIS will regroup and expand there. On the day Bashar al-Assad fled the country, US Central Command hit more than 75 ISIS targets in Syria.

Meanwhile, the incoming Trump administration is eyeing deeper tax cuts along with a rollback of newly built guardrails around consumer finance. Here are a few ways to put yourself in the best financial position for whatever the next 12 months may bring. High-yield savings accounts are still topping out around 4.5%, beating the 2.7% annual inflation rate as of November. Earlier this year a Bankrate survey found about two-thirds Americans were earning suboptimal interest on their savings accounts. Lee said one piece of that puzzle should include government bonds, which “were getting pretty hammered” by the Fed’s interest rate hikes to curb inflation.

The renewables industry faces an uncertain future, but UBS sees promise in the sector in the year ahead, naming two global stocks with over 55% upside on its watch. The sector came into the spotlight after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump vowed to curtail renewable energy subsidies. Renewable stocks have underperformed between 2021 and 2024 largely due to higher government rates in the U.K. and U.S., as well as balance sheet concerns, the analysts noted. Against this backdrop, the analysts noted that European stocks appear "unrealistically cheap." Stocks to watch Stocks on UBS' radar include renewable developers Orsted and RWE given their "growth exposure and more limited exposure to power prices."

San Francicso 49ers kicker Jake Moody could've crawled into the San Andreas Fault and still not had enough cover for the heat he took following a bad game that's about to cap an equally poor season. Moody missed two field goals and an extra point before comically butchering an onside kick in his team's 40-34 loss to the visiting Detroit Lions on "Monday Night Football." After three consecutive appearances in the NFC title game, San Francisco has fallen into last place in the NFC West this season. After that first missed field goal, "Monday Night Football" cameras caught 49ers tight end George Kittle exchanging encouraging words with Moody on the sidelines. Moody is 21-of-32 this season and his 71.9% conversion rate is among the lowest in pro football.

It’s become more acceptable for women to leave their families, partners or spouses behind and travel with a group of like-minded women. Many businesses chasing more solo female travelers are looking to head off some of these concerns. “I was told ‘off the record’ that they make more money from couples and families than from a female solo traveler,” she said. The Swiss travel network A Small World, meanwhile, launched the Solo Cruise Company in May 2024 targeting women 55 and up. Uniworld River Cruises said it has seen a 31% increase in solo guests between 2019 and 2023 and a 61% jump in female solo travelers over the same period.

More than half of 2024 holiday shoppers, or 55%, felt stress at the costs associated with the season, according to a survey conducted online in September by The Harris Poll on behalf of NerdWallet. Still, 32% of consumers thought it was important to purchase holiday gifts and experiences to show their love for family and friends, despite the expenses, the survey found. "This builds a level of almost manic euphoria and gives us permission to ignore a spending plan, achieve instant gratification and worry about the aftershocks later." To that point, 10% of holiday shoppers this year were considering tapping their emergency savings for gifts, according to NerdWallet. To avoid overspending during the holidays, people need to plan ahead and create a spending budget, experts say.
