Britain's Finance Minister Rachel Reeves has pledged to make the "necessary", "urgent" and "incredibly tough" choices to restore the country's economic stability. Finance minister Rachel Reeves on Thursday promised a reboot of regulation governing Britain's "crown jewel" financial industry which she said has shackled the City's global prospects since the global financial crisis and stifled UK economic growth. That has gone too far and, in places, it has had unintended consequences which we must now address." The former Bank of England economist will propose five priority growth opportunities to maximize potential for growth in UK financial services, namely capital markets, fintech, sustainable finance, asset management and wholesale services, and insurance and reinsurance, the excerpts showed. She said the first Financial Services Growth and Competitiveness Strategy would be published in spring to serve as a roadmap for growth, cementing the sector's place at the heart of the government's 10-year Industrial Strategy.

AMD's GPU sales are nearing CPU sales, driven by AI data center demand. AMD raised its 2024 GPU sales forecast to over $5 billion, up from $4.5 billion. AdvertisementWhat could also keep this dynamic from becoming permanent is the immaturity of the ecosystem around AMD GPUs. UBS analysts warned that 2025 may be yet another transition year in which AI data centers and GPU sales don't reach maturity — predicting higher GPU sales in 2026 than in 2025. The analysts expect $5 billion in GPU sales this year to reach around $8 billion next year.

Exactly two weeks before Election Day, a new CNBC/Generation Lab survey finds that Vice President Kamala Harris has grown her advantage in recent months over Republican Donald Trump among Americans between the ages of 18 and 34. Faced with a similar question in July's Youth & Money Survey, only 46% of respondents selected Harris, while 34% said they would be voting for Trump. Kennedy formally dropped his bid for president on Aug. 23, and respondents in the latest poll were not offered a third option. Harris' 20 point lead over Trump in the latest poll is in line with the margin by which President Joe Biden ultimately won younger voters in his 2020 presidential election victory. The latest poll results also hint at an enthusiasm gap among young voters, which Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov.

The savings rate slumped below 3% prior to the 2008 financial crisis, SocGen strategist Albert Edwards said in a note to clients on Wednesday. AdvertisementThe low savings rate attests to strong consumer spending, which has propped up the economy so far. That sounds like it should be good news, but the issue is that the savings rate is likely to rise again after plummeting to such low levels. Related storiesThat was what happened leading up to the Great Financial Crisis, when an uptick in the savings rate preceded the recession, Edwards noted. And while households aren't nearly as indebted as they were during the financial crisis, Americans are still showing signs of financial strain.
