CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

The suspected attacker was affiliated with former President Jair Bolsonaro’s right-wing party, according to CNN affiliate CNN Brasil. Police found messages on Luiz’s social media criticizing and threatening state authorities, CNN Brasil reported. The suspect then tried to enter the Supreme Court building, but was unable to, and a second explosion was detonated outside the door, Leão added. CNN —A businessman was killed in an apparently targeted shooting at São Paulo’s international airport on Friday, CNN Brasil reports. A vehicle matching that description was later found abandoned near the airport, and investigators are determining if it was used in the attack, CNN Brasil added. In a statement, Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport confirmed that police and medical teams were immediately alerted. Military police, civil police, and highway patrol responded to the scene, and the Homicide and Personal Protection Department of São Paulo is leading the investigation, according to CNN Brasil. The São Paulo Secretary of Public Security said authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the homicide.

CNN —A passenger plane carrying 61 people crashed outside São Paulo on Friday afternoon, killing everyone on board, according to a statement issued by airline Voepass. All of the passengers had Brazilian documents, airline officials said, though it’s not yet clear if any had dual citizenship. The country’s Supreme Court released the testimonies from former army commander Marco Antonio Freire Gomes and former air force commander Carlos de Almeida Baptista Jr. to the Brazilian Federal Police on Friday. Bolsonaro allegedly presented the plan in a meeting on December 7, 2022, at the presidential palace in Brasilia. In southern Brazil in July, Laureano Toscani and João Guilherme Correa were smoking cigarettes along a busy road in their prison-issued garb, shorts and sandals, waiting for a ride after seven months in jail. Mr. Toscani was once convicted of stabbing a group of Jewish men, and Mr. Correa has been accused of murdering a couple leaving a party. But this time, they were behind bars for attending what they said was a harmless barbecue. The Brazilian authorities, however, say it was something far more sinister: a meeting of the Hammerskins, a neo-Nazi group founded in Dallas in 1988 that they say has recently found its way thousands of miles south, to Brazil’s most starkly conservative region, reflecting a surge in far-right extremists in Latin America’s largest nation. CNN —A Brazilian hacker said Thursday that former President Jair Bolsonaro asked him if he could hack into voting machines, according to his testimony to a congressional inquiry set up to investigate Brazil’s election results and the storming of governmental buildings on January 8, 2023. Walter Delgatti Neto’s told the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) that during an August 2022 meeting with Bolsonaro, the former president offered to pardon the hacker if he suffered any legal consequences. Bolsonaro’s defense team denied allegations of wiretapping or illegal activity against any political entity in Brazil following Delgatti’s testimony. “I don’t know anyone who had an individual meeting with the president that last an hour and a half. Lie and lie and lie,” said Wajngarten.

The four stowaways aboard a cargo ship had no idea where they were when they were met by federal police officers last month at a Brazilian port. Told they had landed in Brazil, they were stunned. They had hopped on the ship while it was docked 3,500 miles away — in Lagos, the most populous city in the West African nation of Nigeria. They were jobless and desperate, they said, and wanted to go anywhere that might offer better prospects. After rowing out to the vessel, the Ken Wave, they said they climbed into an unlikely space: the 6-foot by 6-foot opening containing the rudder.
