A Florida woman who pleaded guilty for her role in a Ponzi scheme that raked in nearly $200 million was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison. Judge Jose Martinez also sentenced Garcia to three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment, plus additional restitution which will be determined on March 3, the case docket shows. "As a result, Garcia paid investors by running a large Ponzi fraud scheme, paying existing investors using new investor funds while misappropriating millions of dollars for her own personal benefit." In 2021, investors in MJ Capital filed a lawsuit accusing Wells Fargo Bank of aiding the fraud scheme by failing to follow its own anti-money laundering policies.

MIAMI (AP) — A former Haitian senator pleaded guilty on Tuesday in the United States to charges related to the 2021 assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse. John Joel Joseph made his appearance at a Miami federal court and changed his plea after reaching an agreement with the government. Joseph, a very well known politician and opponent of the slain president's Tet Kale party, is one of the 11 people facing charges related to the killing in South Florida. Jaar signed a plea statement in March, which said he provided personnel and funds to kidnap Moise, but the initial plan later turned into a murder plot. Some of the funds were used to buy weapons and pay bribes for the president's security detail, the statement said. Jaar was sentenced on Friday by Southern District of Florida Judge Jose Martinez.
