Mr. Trump is widely regarded around the world as a transactional leader. Chinese officials do see a potential upside if Mr. Trump pulls the United States back from its role as a global leader. But the Kremlin seems skeptical that Mr. Trump would actually push for such a deal, especially because of his track record: There was jubilation in Moscow when Mr. Trump won in 2016, but over the next four years, U.S. sanctions against Russia only increased, and Mr. Trump sent antitank weapons to Ukraine. On Wednesday, he quickly made clear that he would seek to have Mr. Trump on his side, as one of the first world leaders to congratulate Mr. Trump in a post on X. Mr. Trump has been effective in demanding more military spending from fellow NATO members, said Mr. Heisbourg.

Ever since our young nation was born 53 years ago in a traumatic war of liberation from Pakistan, historical amnesia and censorship have afflicted Bangladeshis like a chronic illness. When a regime is toppled, its successor moves quickly to erase the symbols and legacy of the previous one as if it had never existed. There has never been a healthy relationship between the people in power and those who oppose them. The unexpected revolution that toppled the increasingly autocratic and corrupt rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this month offers Bangladesh a chance to break free of this cycle. What makes this revolution unprecedented and so meaningful is that it was a grass-roots movement led by idealistic university students, not one of the warring main political parties.

The murder complaint, filed Tuesday in the Dhaka Metropolitan Court, is the first legal case to be filed against Hasina following her deadly crackdown on huge protests against government employment quotas, that erupted across Bangladesh last month. The murder case also names Hasina’s former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, the general secretary of her party, and four former top police officers. In her first public remarks since leaving Bangladesh, Hasina on Tuesday called for an investigation into the “heinous killings and acts of sabotage” during the protests. Anti-government protestors storm ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's palace in Dhaka, Bangladesh on August 5, 2024. Bangladesh's protest leaders said they expect members of an interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, to be finalized on Wednesday after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina quit and fled to India following a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising. "It is critical that trust in government be restored quickly," Yunus, 84, told the Financial Times on Wednesday, saying he was not seeking an elected role or appointment beyond the interim period. His spokesperson said he is expected to return to Dhaka on Thursday after a medical procedure in Paris. "We need calm, we need a road map to new elections and we need to get to work to prepare for new leadership," Yunus told the newspaper. While loath to criticize any specific swap, current and former U.S. officials worry that strongmen like President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia are exploiting America’s willingness to horse-trade for its citizens. “I worry about the incentive this gives nations to abduct Americans,” said Adam Hickey, a former deputy assistant attorney general in the national security division of the U.S. Justice Department. Speaking of the trend toward hostage trades generally, he added: “I don’t see how this doesn’t lead to an escalation or increase” in the practice by foreign governments. But practical alternatives are hard to come by, Mr. Hickey and other experts concede. In response to Thursday’s deal, former President Donald J. Trump suggested that President Biden had set a “bad precedent” by paying too high a price to Mr. Putin.

Early Thursday, Ella Milman and Mikhail Gershkovich sat to eat at the Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington before a day of celebration — a day they had been waiting to arrive for 16 months. They were joined by their daughter, Danielle, her husband, and executives from Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal. “There were jokes and anecdotes, but there was a palpable emotional load at that table,” Almar Latour, the chief executive of Dow Jones, which publishes The Journal, said in an interview. “We’ve all worked toward this moment, and the family of course has been an inspiration throughout.”Mr. Gershkovich, 32, was arrested in March 2023 in Russia while on a reporting trip and imprisoned on charges of espionage. Mr. Gershkovich, The Journal and the U.S. government vehemently denied those accusations.

In addition to Mr. Gershkovich, the prisoners freed by Russia included Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine arrested in 2018, and the Russian dissident Ilya Yashin, the official said. The prisoners freed by the West included Vadim Krasikov, a convicted Russian assassin, the Turkish official said. The deal seemed sure to prompt jubilation among Western nations that had condemned the charges against Mr. Gershkovich and others as baseless and politically motivated. And it represented a political leap for Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, whose government agreed to release Mr. Krasikov as part of the deal. Mr. Putin has referred to Mr. Krasikov as a patriot for his killing of a Chechen former separatist fighter in Berlin in 2019.

London CNN —British voters have handed the Labour Party its first election victory in almost two decades, hoping that a new center-left government will revive Britain’s ailing economy and fix collapsing public services. The win is a triumph for Keir Starmer, a former chief prosecutor who only entered parliament in 2015 and will become prime minister later Friday. “It feels good, I have to be honest.”But Labour’s jubilation may soon give way to trepidation given the economic challenges ahead. Making these problems even harder to solve: stubbornly low economic growth. To some extent, the government is likely hoping economic growth will be stronger than forecast and help with both goals.

In India’s last general election, in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party won 303 of 543 parliamentary seats — nearly six times as many as the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress. But early election results on Tuesday indicated a far stronger showing than expected for the Congress. “Whatever the final results, one thing is clear — it is a moral victory for Congress and our leader Rahul Gandhi, and defeat for B.J.P.,” said Robin Michael, a political worker, referring to Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. While there was no indication that Congress and the opposition coalition it leads would scrape together a majority to unseat Mr. Modi, party workers said that they had dented Mr. Modi’s aura of invincibility.
