Former Sen. Kelly Ayotte has won the New Hampshire governor’s race, NBC News projects, defeating Democrat Joyce Craig to keep the seat in Republican hands. Ayotte will succeed Republican Gov. Ayotte lost her re-election battle in 2016 to now-Sen. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, by only about a thousand votes. She got her start in politics by serving on the Board of School Committee in Manchester, before serving as an alderman for six years. Craig and Ayotte won their parties’ primaries in September, leaving them with only about eight weeks to campaign in the general election period.

CNN —Republican former Sen. Kelly Ayotte will win the New Hampshire governor’s race, CNN projects, completing a political comeback eight years after she lost her Senate seat. Ayotte defeated Democratic former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig in the race to replace outgoing GOP Gov. The race was a test of whether local interests or the national political atmosphere would play the most important role in influencing Granite State voters. Democrats attempted to nationalize it, tying Ayotte to former President Donald Trump and attacking her on abortion rights. Hillary Clinton won there by just half a point in 2016, but President Joe Biden won by 7 points in 2020.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have tied with three votes each in the tiny New Hampshire township of Dixville Notch, kicking off Election Day in one of the first places in the country to report its presidential preference. By tradition, all eligible voters gather at the now-dormant Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their secret ballots once polls open at midnight. Once every ballot is cast, votes are tallied and results announced – hours before anywhere else, making it a destination for national reporters, who often outnumber the voters. In January, four registered Republican voters and two independents participated in the GOP primary, casting six unanimous votes for former South Carolina Gov. Craig, the former mayor of Manchester, beat out Cinde Warmington, a former health care lobbyist and a member of the state’s Executive Council, in the Democratic primary. Tuesday’s winners will quickly move into a rapid eight-week general election campaign to replace Republican Gov. She held a wide lead in most polls of the GOP primary, allowing her to set her sights early on the general election. Meanwhile, Maggie Goodlander defeated Colin Van Ostern in a contentious and expensive Democratic primary in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, the AP projected. The winner of the primary will enter the general election as the favorite in the blue-leaning 2nd District.

New Hampshire voters will head to the polls Tuesday for a primary that will set up the matchup for one of just two governor’s races in presidential battleground states this year. In addition to North Carolina, New Hampshire is the only other swing state to hold a race for governor this election cycle. “I think that helps people in New Hampshire realize that Kelly Ayotte is a New Hampshire Republican, not a straight party loyalist,” Williams said. In New Hampshire, abortion is banned after fetal viability, or around the 24th week of pregnancy. “We’ve seen in the last few years that governors and state leadership sort of make or break it when it comes to protecting abortion rights,” Levy said.
