Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey announced Friday that he would seek to become the Garden State's next governor, entering what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field. Gottheimer has represented his state's 5th Congressional District, which lies in northern New Jersey, bordering New York, since 2017. But one distinguishing feature of his campaign, Gottheimer said, is that he is "focused like a laser beam on the need to lower your taxes and lower your costs." "He stands up for what he believes, and you can count on him to deliver," Berry said in the campaign video. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., who has served alongside Gottheimer since 2019, is another name that has been floated in the state as a potential candidate in next year's race.

The SALT deduction allows tax payers to deduct up to $10,000 of property, sales or income taxes that have already been paid to state and local governments. Historically, most of the tax payers who claim the deduction reside in high tax states such as New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and California. There was no cap on SALT prior to the Trump tax bill. Some of those recent conversations have featured Trump's new stance on bringing back the full SALT deduction, despite his bill being the cause for the $10,000 cap. Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., told CNBC in a statement that the SALT cap is "hurting" her constituents and said Trump's most recent take on SALT shows he's listened to "Americans across the country hurting from the SALT cap."

22 Democrats voted for a more narrow resolution proposed by a different House Republican. 22 House Democrats voted with the vast majority of Republicans to support a censure resolution put forward by Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia condemning Tlaib. 4 Republicans voted against it, largely on free speech grounds, while 3 Democrats and 1 Republican voted present. That effort failed after 23 Republicans voted to table that resolution, and McCormick was among those who voted against it. Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Ritchie Torres of New York, and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey all voted to censure fellow Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

Six House Republicans voted with Democrats, but attendance issues on the Democratic side allowed the resolution to move forward with a majority of votes anyway. Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois voted against tabling the resolution, while Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania — the top Democrat on the House Ethics Committee — voted present. More than 100 members of Congress signed a letter urging President Biden to boost security assistance for Israel and hold Iran accountable for funding Hamas by enforcing sanctions and working to end Iranian oil trade to China. Led by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D., N.J.), Don Bacon (R., Neb. ), and Claudia Tenney (R., N.Y.), the letter is signed by 63 Democrats and 50 Republicans. “Iran must be held fully accountable for its continued role in funding Hamas and Islamic terror...We urge your Administration to work with our European allies to immediately implement snapback sanctions on Iran at the UN Security Council," the lawmakers wrote. They also said the U.S. should pressure Qatar and Turkey "to cease their support for Hamas and expel Hamas leadership that they host.”
