A federal judge ruled Monday that a volleyball player for the San Jose State University women's team, who is at the center of controversy about transgender athletes, can compete in this week's conference tournament. Judge S. Kato Crews, with the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, denied the emergency motion for a preliminary injunction filed this month against the Mountain West Conference. "San José State University will continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said said. "All San José State University student-athletes are eligible to participate in their sports under NCAA and Mountain West Conference rules." The Mountain West Conference has said it is taking the suit’s allegations seriously.

A franchisee told BI how he's trying to absorb California's $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers. "Right now I'm trying to size what the true impact will be," he said. But the higher minimum wage has meant that Hom's more experienced workers have also got a boost. He declined to say how much he paid them, but noted that it was "significantly higher than the minimum wage." Some franchisees of Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza have laid off all their delivery drivers, believed to be because of the $20 wage.

Read previewA California franchisee has warned that some of his customers think fast food is becoming a "luxury" as restaurants increase prices to cover the state's new $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers. AdvertisementThe new wage in California comes amid rising prices of fast food across the US more generally. A combination of wage and food inflation pushed prices up during the pandemic, and some diners say they're cutting down on how much fast food they eat because it's no longer affordable. "The appetite that my customers have for price increases is not unlimited," Scott Rodrick, a McDonald's franchisee with 18 restaurants in northern California, previously told BI. Is fast food no longer affordable?

By then, the company had already completed much of its multi-year land grab of downtown San Jose for the future campus. Google spent several years planning for the San Jose complex and invested significant resources in winning over the local community. "We all originally knew that it's going to be a long-term plan," San Jose councilmember Omar Torres, who represents the downtown area, told San Jose Spotlight in February.

To afford a "fair market" one bedroom in NYC, minimum wage workers would need to put in 111 hours a week, a study found. They'd have to work even more to afford rent in Dallas, San Jose, or Chicago. When looking at affordability for minimum wage workers, the United Way researchers say that even a fair-market price is out of reach based on their current rate of pay. Instead of paying sky-high rent prices, minimum wage workers are cramming into tighter living arrangements, going homeless, or far exceeding the recommended portion of one's income they should spend on rent. Until this month, the minimum wage for New York home aides was $15 an hour, but got a bump to $17 an hour.
