SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean police said Thursday they had raided Jeju Air and the operator of Muan International Airport as part of their investigation into Sunday’s crash that killed 179 people in the worst aviation disaster on the country’s soil. Jeju Air 7C2216, which departed the Thai capital of Bangkok for Muan in southwestern South Korea, belly-landed and overshot the regional airport’s runway, exploding into flames after hitting an embankment. Jeju Air was cooperating with the police, a director at the airline, Song Kyeong-hoon, told a media briefing. Seoul, South Korea CNN —The damaged flight data recorder from the Jeju Air passenger jet that crash-landed in South Korea will be sent to the United States for analysis, Seoul’s transport ministry said Wednesday, as bereaved families began visiting the crash site. Authorities said the black box was damaged in the crash, and concluded that South Korea is not capable of extracting the data, Seoul’s deputy minister of civil aviation Joo Jong-wan told reporters Wednesday. Earlier, Joo said the flight data recorder was missing a connector. Once the device has been sent overseas, the US National Transportation Safety Board will lead the analysis and be joined by South Korean investigators. The process, which is taking place in South Korea, will take about two days.

An Alaska Airlines flight on Christmas Eve from Anchorage to Fairbanks was forced to turn around after an eagle hit the plane. Alaska Airlines Flight 2041 had taken off from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport at 11:40 a.m. Dec. 24, but turned around and returned about 30 minutes later, according to FlightAware data. When the plane landed back in Anchorage, she said passengers learned that a bird strike involving an eagle was behind the sudden return. “The eagle survived at that time,” Tatela told the station. An Alaska Airlines spokesperson told the station that no emergency was declared and that the captain and first officer are trained for situations like a bird strike.

CNN —American star Lilia Vu sealed an impressive victory at the Women’s Open on Sunday, as she remained unyielding under the pressure of the final round while her rivals dropped shots along the way. Victory marked a comeback of sorts for Vu who has endured a rollercoaster few months. Lilia Vu celebrates as drinks are poured on her on the 18th green. “It was really hard those past couple of months and somehow they believed in me and helped me get this win here.”Vu became the first American winner of the Women’s Open since 2014. Vu’s compatriot Ally Ewing, who had been the runaway leader ahead of the final two rounds, eventually finished in a tie for sixth, four-under par.

Hull finished strong with three birdies on her last four holes for 68, raising hopes of a first home winner since Georgia Hall's victory in 2018, while Vu carded seven birdies and two bogeys for 67. Angel Yin and Kim Hyo-joo were one shot back, while American Ally Ewing was two shots off the pace on seven under par going into Sunday's final round. Frenchwoman Celine Boutier, aiming for a third consecutive win following her triumphs at the Women's Scottish Open and Evian Championship, finished at three-over after a 74.

CNN —US golfer Ally Ewing endured a tough third round at the Women’s Open as the 30-year-old golfer finished two shots behind co-leaders Lilia Vu and Charley Hull at Walton Heath on Saturday. American Vu and Briton Hull share the lead on nine-under par, with Angel Yin and Kim Hyo-joo a shot behind, while Ewing is two shots adrift. However, six bogeys in Ewing’s third round allowed her rivals back into contention for the fifth and final major of the women’s season. Lilia Vu won the Chevron Championship to claim the first major of her career earlier this year. A superb round of 67, ensured the 24-year-old Yin ended the day on eight-under par.
