And the availability of the VIPER spacecraft piqued the company’s interest for future projects, Intuitive Machines told CNN. To get reach that goal, Intuitive Machines will likely have to dip into its own funds to complete VIPER’s finishing touches before liftoff. The Simulated Lunar Operations Lab at NASA Glenn Research Center tested planetary roving vehicle systems and components for vehicles such as the VIPER Rover. The Astrobotic Griffin lunar lander (pictured here in a rendering) is now slated to take off no earlier than late 2025. The lunar lander was designed to carry NASA’s VIPER rover as its main payload.

Astrobotic Technology said contact and then tracking was lost as its lunar lander reentered Earth's atmosphere Thursday, 10 days after launching from Florida. It was the first U.S. lunar lander in more than a half-century. Right before Friday’s U.S. news conference, a lunar lander from Japan touched down on the moon, but it was unable to generate crucial solar power. The U.S., Russia, China and India have successfully landed spacecraft on the moon and only the U.S. has landed astronauts. Flight controllers were able to turn on some experiments and collect data,The company is already is working on an even bigger lunar lander that will carry NASA's Viper rover to the moon in a year.

This month, Astrobotic's Peregrine lunar lander failed to reach the moon due to a fuel leak. Despite the setback, Astrobotic plans to launch a second lunar lander in November. AdvertisementEarlier this month, the space company Astrobotic launched its Peregrine mission toward the moon, but the spacecraft never made it and ultimately burned up in Earth's atmosphere. During Astrobotic's first press conference since its failed Peregrine mission, the company's CEO, John Thornton, said Astrobotic is more excited than ever to attempt to send another lunar lander to the moon. "Our latest assessment now shows the spacecraft is on a path towards Earth, where it will likely burn up in Earth's atmosphere," Astrobotic, the company behind the Peregrine lander, said on Saturday. For the vast majority of the mission, the Peregrine lander has been controlled solely by its attitude control thrusters, which are tiny engines mounted to the side of the lander and designed to maintain stability or make precision movements. What Peregrine could and couldn’t accomplishAstrobotic was able to power on some of the science instruments and other payloads on board the lander. The Peregrine lander was also able to activate a new sensor, developed by NASA, that was designed to help the spacecraft land on the moon. Likewise, an array of other payloads designed specifically to operate on the moon remain trapped aboard the Peregrine lander. The Peregrine spacecraft is also carrying various mementos, letters and even human remains that customers paid to fly on the mission.

Gold miner unearths risky M&A seam

That’s precisely what Newmont (NEM.N) boss Tom Palmer has just done, offering $17 billion in stock for Australian gold excavator Newcrest Mining (NCM.AX). At present Newmont is offering a 22% premium to the target’s undisturbed share price, after Newcrest rejected an earlier 17% boost. What Canada’s Barrick Gold (ABX.TO) does in response is the main question. It is the world’s largest gold miner, which at $40 billion sports a market capitalisation 25% higher than Barrick’s. Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO), the $24 billion third-largest miner of the ore, may want to dig in, too.
