CNN —With two presidential candidates fighting over a mere 538 Electoral College votes, a tie scenario is more than possible. Those individual, competitive electoral votes in Maine and Nebraska become hugely consequential in potential tie scenarios. If there’s a 269-269 tie, or if a third party or independent candidate wins electoral votes and keeps a candidate from reaching an Electoral College majority of 270, the next step is the same. Has a contingent election happened in the years since the tied election of 1800? In 1876, when there was a contested outcome, the contingent election system was bypassed.

“Not one man in America wanted the Civil War, or expected or intended it,” Henry Adams, grandson of John Quincy Adams, declared at the beginning of the 20th century. In this respect at least, the current division that afflicts the United States seems different from the Civil War. If there ever is a second civil war, it won’t be for lack of imagining it. Some critics have denounced the project, arguing that releasing the film in this particular election year is downright dangerous. The reason for a surge in anxiety over a civil war is obvious.

CNN —A high-profile lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s X targeting hate speech researchers appeared to stumble on Thursday as a federal judge sounded a skeptical note on many of the lawsuit’s allegations, suggesting that the company formerly known as Twitter hasn’t done enough to establish its claims. The judge in the case signaled he may toss out X’s claims but appeared undecided on whether to let the company amend and refile the suit. X has also blamed CCDH’s reports, which showcase the prevalence of hate speech on the platform, for amplifying brand safety concerns and driving advertisers away from the site. “You could have brought a defamation case; you didn’t bring a defamation case,” Breyer told X attorney Jonathan Hawk. ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama's first-ever use of nitrogen gas for an execution could gain traction among other states and change how the death penalty is carried out in the United States, much like lethal injection did more than 40 years ago, according to experts on capital punishment. Oklahoma and Mississippi already have laws authorizing the use of nitrogen gas for executions, and some other states, including Nebraska, have introduced measures this year to add it as an option. “This is a chapter in a long-running story in the United States,” Sarat said. A majority of states, 29, have either abolished the death penalty or paused executions, and there were just 24 executions carried out in five U.S. states in 2023, according to Washington, D.C.-based Death Penalty Information Center. “More states have abolished the death penalty since 2007 than in any other comparable 17-year period in American history,” Sarat noted.

It marked the first time a new execution method was used in the U.S. since 1982, when lethal injection was introduced and later became the most common method. The state had predicted the nitrogen gas would cause unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes. After he had a chance to make a final statement, the warden, from another room, was to activate the nitrogen gas. And experts appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Council cautioned they believe the execution method could violate the prohibition on torture. Smith's attorneys had raised concerns that he could choke to death on his own vomit as the nitrogen gas flows.

CNN —Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney said she believes a GOP majority in the House in 2025 would present a “threat” to the country. “I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party, but the Republican Party of today has made a choice and they haven’t chosen the Constitution. And we have to ensure that we don’t have a situation where the election that might be thrown into the House of Representatives is overseen by a Republican majority,” she said. Bidenomics Gets No Respect

Bidenomics was supposed to be Mr. Biden’s path to a second term. The latest dark cloud is the New York Times /Siena College poll that found in five battleground states Mr. Biden is running behind the Permanent Defendant, Donald Trump. Conventional wisdom—conventional because there’s something to it—blames Mr. Biden’s age (a nice word for neurological decline), inflation’s lingering effects, high interest rates and John Q. Public’s sour mood. Nearly three years after Mr. Biden’s inauguration, more than 70% think the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot is also accused of extorting and defrauding the teen’s mother. But Kelly confirmed to CNN that van der Sloot intends to plead guilty in connection to the case. The 18-year-old was last seen leaving a nightclub with van der Sloot and two other men, brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. They were rearrested and charged in 2007 for “involvement in the voluntary manslaughter of Natalee Holloway or causing serious bodily harm to Natalee Holloway, resulting in her death,” Aruban prosecutors said at the time. Van der Sloot confessed to killing Flores and was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison.

Van der Sloot, 36, was extradited to Alabama in June from a prison in Peru, where he has been serving a 28-year sentence for murdering another woman in Lima. Eyewitnesses said she was last seen leaving a bar in a car with van der Sloot on the night of her disappearance. Van der Sloot has reached a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors that require him to also truthfully disclose what happened to Natalee Holloway, according to John Q. Kelly, a lawyer for the Holloway family. A public defender representing van der Sloot and a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office did not respond to questions about a plea deal. In 2012, van der Sloot was convicted in Peru after he confessed to beating, strangling and suffocating Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, in May 2010.

Now in Hangzhou, they yearn to give hope to the hopeless - the women athletes left behind in their homeland. "Nowadays, they are looking for hope," Mursal Khedri, a Pakistan-based, 24-year-old member of the volleyball team, told Reuters. They play their first group match against Kazakhstan when the women's volleyball tournament starts on Saturday. For the Afghanistan women in Hangzhou, it is a thrill to compete at a high level but there are also nerves. They are unlikely to attend competition venues to cheer on the women's volleyball team or other Afghan women athletes due to the sensitivity of the situation.

CNN —Presidential history is lousy with ne’er-do-well sons. American history tells us a different story: Bad presidential sons are as old as the nation itself, yet political opponents have never thought weaponizing them would win an election. If there is evidence that a sitting president, a former president, a presidential candidate, a presidential heir or anyone else, has committed a crime, he or she should be held accountable. “I never did in my Life know a Youth so exceedingly indolent, or so surprisingly voluptuous,” Jack’s tutor, Reverend Jonathan Boucher, wrote to George Washington. The financials sector is down 2%, while energy is nearly 9% lower. These unloved sectors are growing attractive to investors increasingly torn over whether a long-feared U.S. recession will ever materialize. Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial noted a "tug of war" in the market over the likelihood of a recession. The healthcare sector trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 17.6, well below the 20.1 ratio of the broad S&P 500. Yet a continued rally in megacaps will likely stretch their valuations further, prompting some investors to rotate toward healthcare and financials, LPL Financial's Krosby said.

Roman’s initial response is to troll, by making a snide comment about the “incredibly evolved, ruthlessly segregated” community of Los Angeles. But Kendall is excited about them putting their own stamp on Waystar, and thinks these two firings may impress the markets. It’s a reasonable assumption too, because Kendall is in full Icarus mode throughout this episode. There are few things more entertaining in “Succession” than Kendall in a boss groove, tossing out big ideas and buzzy business jargon at a rapid clip. (“Numbers aren’t just numbers, they’re numbers,” Pete sputters.)
“He knows democracy is on the line, he knows slavery is a moral evil,” Crawford said of Adams, who became a leading antislavery voice in the House of Representatives, where he served after leaving the White House. He deserves to be in the pantheon.”“Founding Son,” available through iHeartRadio starting April 13, is the latest entry in the crowded field of history podcasts. But it’s one where Crawford (who composed and played the show’s old-timey mandolin theme) hopes to use his musical celebrity and serious historical chops to illuminate a complex, formative period in the evolution of American democracy. The Early Republic, as scholars call it, may be a rich field of study. But it’s largely a blank for most Americans, who are a bit foggy on what exactly happened between the American Revolution and the Civil War.
While on a camping trip, someone asked Thurmond to create a firepit that wasn't so "massive" and "cumbersome," Thurmond said. Cuban, himself a billionaire entrepreneur, seemed impressed by Thurmond's commitment to getting his product right. Thurmond asked the show's panel of investors — including Cuban — for $200,000 of funding, in exchange for a 10% equity stake in LavaBox. Then, Lori Greiner asked Thurmond a question: What's the most important thing to you in a partner? She offered Thurmond $200,000 for a 15% equity stake, adding a 75 cent royalty per product sold until making back her investment.
On the agenda today:But first: The panic over the AI boom hit a new peak this week. A prominent AI researcher went further, saying six months wasn't long enough, and "we need to shut it all down." But those fears also make sense against the backdrop of a shaky economy and a distrust of Big Tech. Goldman Sachs has forecast that AI systems could impact 300 million full-time jobs. AI has been described as the next transformational technology, on a par with the creation of the internet or the television.
