Now, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are fast becoming household names and the next generation-defining rivalry. However, Sinner and Alcaraz – ranked No. Due to their rapid success, it is easy to forget that Sinner is only 23 and Alcaraz just 21. Sinner hits a shot in the semifinals of the US Open, a tournament he went on to win. Time will tell if Sinner can put that ice-cold instinct to good use at the ATP Finals and win the tournament for the first time.

Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, announced his retirement Thursday at age 38, bringing to a close the most dominant clay-court career in the history of the sport. Nadal’s 22 Grand Slams put him second on the all-time men’s list behind Novak Djokovic. “I don’t think I’ve been able to play without limitations.”Born on the Spanish vacation island of Mallorca, Nadal won two grand slams each at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The London crowd was treated to five sets over almost five hours, finishing at 9 p.m. in near darkness to become the longest Wimbledon final on record at the time. Nadal took the first two sets, was then pegged back 2-2, before winning the final, epic set 9-7.

CNN —Carlos Alcaraz led Team Europe to a comeback victory over Team World in the Laver Cup on Sunday, triumphing in both his singles and his doubles matchups. It marked Europe’s fifth win in the Laver Cup and first since 2021. “It’s great, obviously, we came here with a goal, all of us, that is to win the Laver Cup,” said Alcaraz. Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz to secure Laver Cup victory for Team Europe. For me, to spend time with these players in Team Europe, it’s a lot of fun.

In defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final in straight sets – a straightforward 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory against one of the sport’s greats – Alcaraz became the first Spaniard to successfully defend his Wimbledon crown, a feat not even Rafael Nadal had managed. Not even the “Big Three” of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic had won as many grand slams at such an age. Nadal was 22 by the time he had won four, Federer 23 and Djokovic 24. Extraordinary tennisThe match started in Technicolor, a 14-minute opening game which ended with Alcaraz breaking Djokovic. Perhaps the achievement of reaching a major final after suffering a meniscus tear during the French Open should not be lost in the aftermath of this contest.

CNN —There will be no last hurrah for Andy Murray at Wimbledon after his playing partner and fellow Briton, Emma Raducanu, withdrew from the mixed doubles event. “I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care,” the 21-year-old Raducanu said in a statement. It means that 37-year-old Murray has played his last match at Wimbledon after announcing earlier this year he will retire from tennis this season. Murray has become a legend at Wimbledon ever since making his debut at the tournament as a teenager in 2005. Murray made his first Wimbledon singles final in 2012 where he lost to Roger Federer – a defeat which moved the British star to tears and somewhat changed the public’s perception of him.

Four years ago, David Lewis received a phone call from the coroner’s office in Washington, D.C. His oldest daughter, Carolina, a former college tennis player, had been found dead in a hotel room. The Lewises are tennis royalty in their native New Zealand. Another brother, Chris, played in the 1983 Wimbledon men’s singles final, losing to John McEnroe. For a time, Carolina and her sister, Jade, carried on the family tradition. When they showed promise on the court as young teenagers, their parents moved the family to the United States so the girls could chase tennis stardom.

3 seeds, Ram and Salisbury also won the 2020 Australian Open. But this title may have been just as unexpected after they rebounded from a difficult year to win the final major of the circuit. They had won only one previous tournament this year, the Lyon Open in France in May, and were 4-6 in their last 10 matches coming into the U.S. Open. But none of those duos were able to string together three straight at the U.S. Open, the last major of the calendar year. The pair have thrilled tennis fans this season with two special matches, first in the Wimbledon final and then most recently at the Cincinnati Open. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable season in 2023, winning six titles that include Wimbledon – his second grand slam – and two Masters 1000 events. “What Alcaraz has done in the last year is unbelievable,” seven-time grand slam champion John McEnroe told Eurosport. "It's hard to envision," McEnroe said of whether anyone not named Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev or even Jannik Sinner could triumph. "But it would be incredible for an American player to make a breakthrough to me, but the likelihood is that it isn't going to happen. "You can see it's going to be Djokovic or Alcaraz, Medvedev is the next guy, and then Sinner. Medvedev clung on stubbornly, however, and as the fire in the Eubanks racket began to fade he took charge to reach the semi-finals at the grasscourt slam for the first time. Eubanks used his sledgehammer forehand to break the Medvedev serve to lead 3-1 in the second set -- beaming broadly and imploring the crowd for more noise. Medvedev looked bewildered and out of ideas as Eubanks kept swinging for the hills, landing blow after blow. Medvedev looked close to boiling point as he whacked a ball dangerously close to the fans, argued with umpire Damien Dumusois and received a warning. Eubanks cut a dejected figure in the deciding set as his dream faded away and the end came quickly.
