AdvertisementFord is cutting 4,000 jobs in Europe after "significant losses" in its passenger vehicle operations. The company also cited rising competition and weaker-than-expected demand for EVs. Ford CFO John Lawler called for joint industry action in a letter to the German government. Ford said it would cut 4,000 jobs in Europe by the end of 2027 amid rising competition and weaker-than-expected demand for EVs. Earlier this month, Japanese automaker Nissan announced 9,000 layoffs and a 20% cut in global production amid falling sales in the US and China.

Ford Explorer electric cars are parked on car transporters on the Ford factory premises. It is the first electric car from Ford in Europe. The US car manufacturer Ford wants to cut 2,900 jobs in Germany by the end of 2027 in order to reduce costs. Ford said on Wednesday it would cut around 14% of its European workforce, blaming significant losses in recent years compounded by weak demand for electric vehicles, a lack of government support for the shift to EVs, and rising competition. The European Union has slapped tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, saying they benefit from unfair subsidies from China's government.

Ford to lay off 4,000 workers in Europe

London CNN —Ford plans to cut almost 4,000 jobs in Europe over the next three years, about 14% of its workforce in the region, as the carmaker faces slowing demand for electric vehicles and rising competition from China. “The global auto industry continues to be in a period of disruption, especially in Europe, where the industry faces unprecedented competitive, regulatory and economic headwinds,” Ford said in a statement. Last year, the company said it would axe around 4,900 jobs across Europe. The news of the Ford cuts comes just weeks after Volkswagen said it would trim employee pay by 10% to protect jobs and safeguard the company’s future. The German automaker plans to close at least three factories in its home country and lay off tens of thousands of staff as it grapples with a weak car market in Europe and a steep loss of market share in China.

Ford CEO Jim Farley says he's been driving the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi's EV for the past six months. AdvertisementFord CEO Jim Farley says he doesn't want to give up the Xiaomi Speed Ultra 7 he's been driving for the past half year. "I don't like talking about the competition so much, but I drive the Xiaomi," Farley said while speaking to the British presenter Robert Llewellyn on "The Fully Charged Podcast." Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says automakers need to hunker down if they want to beat the Chinese. Ford's CEO, meanwhile, called the Chinese auto industry an "existential threat" after a visit to the country in May. When it comes to competing in the EV market, Western automakers have been left playing a game of catch-up with the Chinese. Chinese automakers like BYD have been expanding into Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, as well as developing markets like Brazil and Mexico. The crippling trade restrictions effectively shut them out of the US auto market.

Now unions are pushing back, demanding the return of traditional pension plans their members lost in past concession deals. First, a traditional pension plan that pays retirees, or their survivors, a fixed amount of money every month until they die, known as a defined benefit plan. Far less than 1% have only a traditional pension plan. The loss of the traditional pension plan at Boeing 10 years ago is one of the issues driving the strike this year. So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.

New York CNN —Millions of sports fans and concertgoers are being duped by a deceptive pricing scheme at StubHub that hides the true cost of tickets until the very last moment, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Washington, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb. The lawsuit accuses StubHub of deploying pricing tactics that “trick” consumers into overpaying for tickets and are designed to boost profits. “StubHub uses a classic bait-and-switch scheme,” the lawsuit said, describing what’s known as “drip pricing” where only part of the product’s price is advertised initially. “We strongly support federal and state solutions that enhance existing laws to empower consumers, such as requiring all-in pricing uniformly across platforms.”According to the lawsuit, StubHub did use an “all-in pricing” model from 2014 to 2015 where the advertised prices included the mandatory fees. However, the company abandoned that more transparent model after testing found that customers were more likely to ultimately buy tickets when those fees are only shown at the end, the lawsuit said.

New York CNN —Shares of Ford fell more than 11% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the automaker reported much weaker than expected earnings. The company said it was compelled to set aside more money to cover the cost of repairing customers’ vehicles. That badly missed analysts’ forecasts of earnings per share of 68 cents a share. It was the nearly 50% drop in operating profit in Ford Blue, which includes traditional gasoline-powered cars and truck sales to consumers, that hurt its bottom line. Ford Pro, which includes fleet sales to businesses and governments, reported a modest gain in operating profits.

General Motors approved yet another stock buyback — adding to our frustration that portfolio name Ford has yet to embark on a repurchase program of its own. GM on Tuesday announced a new $6 billion buyback — weeks before its November $10 billion repurchase authorization is set to be completed. "I'm very upset with Ford," Jim Cramer said during the Morning Meeting for Club members. While encouraged by Ford's successful pivot, we believe a sizeable stock buyback would be a catalyst for Ford shares as it has been for GM. General Motors is buying back a ton of stock; Ford, so far, not so much. Before the buyback disclosure late this year, Ford had been down 10%, which was less than GM's 14% decline. In 2023, Ford spent $5.33 billion on dividends and stock repurchases, with only 6.3% of that total on buybacks. New York CNN —Last fall Ford agreed to a big raise for striking members of the United Auto Workers union. The company announced it would give shareholders a second, supplemental dividend that will more than double the regular dividend they usually receive. Even with the drop in fourth-quarter earnings, full-year earnings at Ford rose to $8.1 billion from $7.6 billion for 2022. The high end of that range would reflect record profits by that measure for the company, said Ford CFO John Lawler. Ford is the second automaker to increase payouts to shareholders since reaching the deal with the UAW.

DETROIT — Ford Motor is rethinking its electric vehicle strategies, including "reassessing" the need for vertical integration of batteries, CEO Jim Farley said Tuesday. He also said the company is pulling a target for its EV unit that called for 8% margin by 2026. As Ford pulls back and reevaluates the EV business, it intends to lean in on sales of hybrid vehicles, specifically trucks. The company expects its hybrid sales to increase 40% this year.
