CNN —Donald Trump’s leadership PAC paid out more than $2.9 million to law firms last month as his legal troubles mounted and racked up an additional $1.9 million in unpaid legal bills at the end of January, according to a filing Tuesday night with federal regulators. Save America, a political action committee seeded with money Trump raised after his 2020 loss, has been the primary vehicle for underwriting legal bills for Trump and some witnesses in the cases surrounding him. Last year alone, Save America spent more than $55 million on legal bills, accounting for nearly 85% of its spending. Trump’s political operation has directed 10% of the money it raises online from his political supporters to Save America. “It is a form of Navalny, it is a form of communism or fascism,” Trump said.

The vast majority — nearly $40 million — went to law firms working on his personal legal problems. But significant portions of their donations went to law firms defending Trump in civil cases involving his real-estate empire and its top executives, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump. Only about $861,000 was spent on law firms working exclusively on political issues. Where there were gaps, we contacted law firms and individual lawyers who received money from the PACs. In 2021 and 2022 combined, Trump spent $16 million on legal fees through the Save America PAC.

The testy clashes have come to be expected as Trump's lawyers carry into the courtroom the bombastic, and often antagonistic, style that defines his campaign trail demeanor. There's no doubt that the lawyers, with some exceptions, have struggled to score major points with judges and in fact have often provoked their ire. Both cases have been defined by contentious exchanges between judges and Trump and his lawyers. In November, for instance, they pushed unsuccessfully for a mistrial in the fraud case, accusing Judge Arthur Engoron of “tangible and overwhelming” bias. Chutkan has repeatedly admonished Trump’s lawyers for political arguments, once telling attorney John Lauro during debate over whether restrictions could be placed on Trump's speech that though she knew he had a “message” to convey, she didn't want campaign rhetoric in court.

Trump's legal team argued against his gag order in his upcoming election interference trial. AdvertisementA panel of three judges on Monday appeared highly skeptical of arguments from Donald Trump's legal team seeking to revoke a gag order that bars him from attacking potential witnesses in his election interference criminal case. Depending on "the context," Lauro argued, Trump would be permitted to pressure possible witnesses not to cooperate with prosecutors. The gag order in the election interference case is separate from a gag order in another ongoing civil trial against Trump in New York. He found that Trump violated it earlier in November, though an appeals court on Thursday temporarily lifted the order.

REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a legal motion backing media requests for live television coverage of his federal trial on charges he conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump is facing four criminal proceedings, including the federal court trial set for March in which he faces charges of attempting to defraud the federal government and obstructing Congress by knowingly spreading false claims of election fraud. In his latest filing by his lawyers, John Lauro and Todd Blanche, Trump endorsed requests by media organizations that U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan allow live television coverage of the trial. "Every person in America, and beyond, should have the opportunity to study this case firsthand and watch as, if there is a trial, President Trump exonerates himself of these baseless and politically motivated charges," said the filing. Smith earlier this month opposed the media requests, citing a decades-old federal court rule barring broadcasts of criminal proceedings.

By Andrew GoudswardWASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Friday asked former President Donald Trump whether he wants to appear on television when he stands trial in federal court on charges of attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington asked Trump’s lawyers to give their opinion by Nov. 10 on media requests to broadcast the trial, which is scheduled to begin in March 2024. They argue that a federal rule barring broadcast of criminal proceedings is unconstitutional. Trump has made extensive comments to TV cameras staked outside a New York state courtroom, where he is currently standing trial on civil business-fraud charges. Proceedings in a separate criminal election-subversion case in Georgia involving Trump and more than a dozen other defendants have been televised.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa on Monday, Trump called the judge's order "unconstitutional" and vowed to appeal it. "I'll be the only politician in history that runs with a gag order where I'm not allowed to criticize people," Trump told supporters. The order bars Trump, frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and attorneys in the case from personally targeting Special Counsel Jack Smith, prosecutors working with him and court staff. Prosecutors sought a limited gag order that would bar certain statements from Trump during the case. The judge said she would allow Trump to make critical statements about the U.S. Justice Department and that denounce the prosecution as politically motivated.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a Manhattan courthouse trial in a civil fraud case in New York, October 17, 2023. Attorneys for Donald Trump said Tuesday said they will appeal the partial gag order imposed on the former president in his federal election interference case in Washington, D.C.Trump had vowed to challenge U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan's gag order, which bars him from public statements targeting special counsel Jack Smith, potential witnesses and others. Chutkan wrote in the order that Trump's statements attacking various people involved in the criminal case posed "grave threats to the integrity of these proceedings." Trump has claimed that the order will hamper his ability to speak on the 2024 presidential campaign trail. "They put a gag order on me, and I'm not supposed to be talking about things that bad people do."

“This is not about whether I like the language Mr. Trump uses,” Judge Tanya Chutkan said. Trump will appeal Chutkan’s order, he said in a post on his social media website Truth Social. Following the two federal indictments against the former president, Trump has lashed out against prosecutors, potential witnesses and the judge overseeing the election subversion case in Washington. “When you start to use a word like ‘thug’ to describe a prosecutor doing their job, that wouldn’t be allowed by any other criminal defendant,” Chutkan said. Judge Orders Trump to Rein In Incendiary Language

“This is not about whether I like the language Mr. Trump uses,” U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan said in announcing the decision. But Molly Gaston, who argued for the prosecution, underscored that the Justice Department isn’t seeking to prevent Trump from campaigning. Notably, the judge’s order deals Trump one of the first major consequences he’ll have to reckon with in relation to his ongoing trials. It remains to be seen how the order will impact his daily social media presence and campaigning tactics. Trump did not immediately respond directly to Chutkan’s order, but a spokesman called it the work of “weaponized and targeted law enforcement.”

At one point, Chutkan asked prosecutor Molly Gaston to define which of Trump's statements about the case would qualify as "disparaging," and therefore be barred under the gag order. Lauro also argued that a gag order would adversely impact Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. "I do not need to hear any campaign rhetoric in my court," Chutkan chided Lauro at one point. Trump himself has repeatedly railed against the prosecutors' request for a partial gag order, accusing them of trying to "silence" him. During the hearing itself, Trump posted, "The TRUMP GAG ORDER that the CORRUPT Biden Administration is trying to obtain is totally Unconstitutional!"

Trump, as a criminal defendant, "does not have the right to say and do exactly as he pleases," Chutkan said. The exchanges came as U.S. prosecutors sought a court order to limit Trump's public statements about people involved in the case. Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 U.S. election. Molly Gaston, a prosecutor working with Special Counsel Jack Smith, said the order was necessary to prevent Trump from trying the case "in the court of public opinion." "These prosecutors want to prevent President Trump from speaking out on the issues of the day," Lauro told the judge, adding that the case is "inextricably intertwined with campaign issues."

Though limited in scope, the gag order from Judge Tanya Chutkan is likely the biggest limit on the former president’s speech he has ever been handed. Chutkan outlined the order in court and plans to issue a more detailed written order in the coming days. That order bars Trump only from speaking publicly about the court staff in his civil fraud trial. Chutkan also said she believed she could issue a show-cause order, which would require Trump justify why he breached the rules of the gag order. Violations of the gag order may not necessarily need to be raised by prosecutors for Chutkan to impose a penalty, she said.

They pointed to Trump's recent disparagement of the clerk of the New York judge overseeing a civil case against him that caused the judge to issue a limited gag order. Smith's team wants the judge to issue a written questionnaire to weed out potential jurors before jury selection begins in the case scheduled for trial in March. "Such a precaution is not only necessary to ensure that all parties handle sensitive juror information responsibly, but also so that the Court can assure prospective and seated jurors in this case that no party will improperly use their names or other identifying information," prosecutors wrote. John Lauro, an attorney for Trump, did not immediately return a message seeking comment but the government’s motion indicates that defense attorneys oppose it. Half a century ago, the Supreme Court ruled in the United States v. Nixon that executive privilege is not absolute. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court in 1974 rejected Nixon’s argument – a ruling that marked the end of his presidency. But would the Supreme Court half a century later say the same? “It wouldn't shock me to find that the Supreme Court tries to avoid a showdown,” Geyh says. “One could see certain issues developing through the course of litigation that do present the type of constitutional question that the Supreme Court would take,” Geyh says.

A federal judge set Trump's election interference trial in Washington, DC, for March 4, 2024. Prosecutors want a trial quickly because Trump's social media attacks could influence the jury pool. Lucian Chalfen, a spokesperson for the New York state court system, told Insider that Trump's trial date in Manhattan has not been changed. Judges have sought to reign in Trump's social media posts in other ways. Lauro has previously said he wants the case trial in West Virginia, which legal experts say is unlikely to happen.

Washington CNN —The federal criminal trial of Donald Trump on charges he sought to subvert the result of the 2020 presidential election will begin March 4, 2024, the day before the Super Tuesday primary, a federal judge ruled Monday. Special counsel Jack Smith had proposed a January 2024 start date and Trump sought to begin the trial two years later, in April 2026. Smith’s team told Chutkan in a filing earlier this month that the trial should begin on January 2, 2024. “The government’s objective is clear: to deny President Trump and his counsel a fair ability to prepare for trial,” they wrote in their filing. In the Georgia case, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last week suggested an October 23, 2023, trial date, something Trump’s team also said they oppose.
