And by the way, I do believe that President Trump has the ability to pick some really, really good people. We've seen what they've done to President Trump, we've seen the attacks that they continue to go after him with. That's - that’s being taken completely out of context. And President Trump hasn't been the one that weaponized the DOJ to go after his political enemies. I think that's a pretty controversial pick, from whatever pronoun that he or he - he or she decides to use.

In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar examines how House Republicans are growing increasingly aligned with Donald Trump. Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker looks back at how Trump's Cabinet announcements from right yers ago compare to now. The House GOP is more aligned with Trump than everBy Ben KamisarPresident-elect Donald Trump and the GOP believe Americans delivered them a mandate last week when they handed the party unified control of Washington. Newly elected Senate GOP leader John Thune certainly isn’t a Trump antagonist, but he’s a descendent of the institutional Republican Party. It’s a dynamic worth keeping tabs on, especially as Senate Republicans begin the process of vetting Trump’s Cabinet picks.

“President Trump is going to hit the Justice Department with a blowtorch, and Matt Gaetz is that torch,” Steve Bannon, Trump’s former White House strategist, told NBC News. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said she didn't think Gaetz was "a serious nomination for the attorney general." From bitter experience, Trump knows that he needs an attorney general he can trust implicitly, and it might be worth the political capital to battle for Gaetz's confirmation. Little happened in Trump’s first term that angered him as much as Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself and appoint a special counsel to investigate whether there were links between his 2016 campaign and Russia. In Gaetz, Trump would get an attorney general who has said Trump won the election that year, as well as an iconoclast who shares his willingness to upset the status quo.

Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesSusie Wiles is set to make history as the country's first female chief of staff to a president. A veteran Florida strategist who led Trump's political operation for nearly four years, Wiles is seen as loyal and supremely capable. A grandmother who keeps a relatively low public profile, Wiles is Trump's only campaign manager to have lasted an entire election cycle, The New York Times reported. She has a proven ability to manage Trump's unpredictable personality, which will be crucial as she takes on what some consider the second-most-powerful job in Washington, behind the presidency itself. Chris LaCivita, Trump's co-campaign manager, described her as "loyal and honest as the day is long."

Neither Wiles nor Trump’s transition team immediately responded when asked if Wiles would soon step away from her position at Mercury. “The clown car can’t come into the White House at will,” the source said. She worked on Ronald Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign and then in his White House. He then gave her nearly unfettered leeway to operate his Florida campaign as she saw fit. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio posted on social media: “President Trump has chosen a strong, intelligent woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff.”

CNN —Pentagon officials are holding informal discussions about how the Department of Defense would respond if Donald Trump issues orders to deploy active-duty troops domestically and fire large swaths of apolitical staffers, defense officials told CNN. “Troops are compelled by law to disobey unlawful orders,” said another defense official. “But the question is what happens then – do we see resignations from senior military leaders? At the time, defense officials tried to include as few civilian employees as possible to limit the impact to the workforce, sources said. CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.

While Trump may not want to associate with that plan, it was formulated by his allies – at least 140 people associated with Project 2025 worked in Trump’s administration, according to a review by CNN’s Steve Contorno. Trump’s adviser Stephen Miller said on Fox News to expect deportations to begin the moment Trump is again president on January 20, 2025. Commonly referred to as “Schedule F,” Trump’s plan was to undo long-standing protections for nonpartisan civil servants. John McEntee, who was director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office during Trump’s first administration, worked on Project 2025, building a list of Trump loyalists suitable for administration roles. Only one of the 26 potential positions in a Trump Cabinet, Vice President-elect JD Vance, is in place.

The West WingOne of Trump’s most important picks will be his White House chief of staff. Karoline Leavitt, who was Trump’s campaign spokeswoman, is being considered as White House press secretary – a job that typically is the most public-facing position in the White House. National security postsTrump has suggested his national security team would be tasked with reassessing the United States’ posture toward Ukraine and Russia, China, Iran, and the simmering conflict in the Middle East. The debate over a renewed Trump’s “America First” agenda is expected to pit Republican national security hawks against the party’s isolationist wing. Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk, an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the campaign trail, the White House and Capitol Hill. The final undecided voters could sway the election. But in a narrowly divided presidential election, voters who have put off making a decision until the last minute could find themselves with the power to decide the future of the country. Late-deciding voters broke for Trump in 2020 and 2016, with some analysts and strategists in both campaigns crediting them for electing Trump eight years ago. And it was true in 2020, when the pandemic and debates played an oversize role in the election featuring Trump and Joe Biden.

CNN —Democrats are mounting an unprecedented digital advertising campaign in the closing weeks of the presidential race, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into a targeted effort that the party hopes will tip the balance in one of the closest elections in US history. The effort is being steered by Future Forward PAC, or FF PAC, the largest single-candidate super PAC in the 2024 election. The 2024 election is poised to break the record set by the 2020 election and see $10.2 billion worth of campaign advertising, according to the ad tracking firm AdImpact. The ad laboratoryWith its massive war chest, FF PAC has faced the challenge of effectively and efficiently distributing its resources. FF PAC has not engaged in a comparable turnout effort, leaving that traditional campaign activity to the cash-flush Harris operation.

Harris will call on Americans to “turn the page” on the Trump era and present herself as a pragmatist who will put results over party, according to a senior Harris campaign official who requested anonymity. Her campaign aims to invoke Jan. 6 as a way to remind those voters what they don’t like about Trump. President Donald Trump arrives to speak to supporters from the Ellipse near the White House on Jan. 6, 2021. Highlighting Kelly’s remarks about Trump’s authoritarian inclinations helped Harris among those crucial voters, the firm said in a memo, but by less than the economic-focused pitches. Her campaign hopes it will be seen as a hopeful and optimistic address with imagery of the White House behind her.

But equally important, in their view, was its ability to evoke the promise of the office she seeks. That was not the original intent of Harris’ major address, aides said, but they believe it serves as a timely rebuttal. A permit for the event showed as many as 20,000 people were expected to attend, with spillover onto the National Mall – her first major campaign speech outdoors in Washington. Last week, the leading super PAC supporting Harris’ candidacy raised concerns that the Harris campaign was too closely centering its closing message on calling Trump a fascist. The sweeping backdrop of the White House and the National Mall was designed for maximum effect a week before the final day of voting.

It was exactly the kind of rhetoric that the Harris campaign believes could prompt moderate voters and disaffected Republicans to choose the vice president. Harris was in red-state Texas on Friday to highlight hardline GOP abortion policies she warns could spread countrywide if Trump wins. The CNN Poll of Polls shows no clear leader nationally with Harris at 48% and Trump at 47%. Harris’ rally will provide an emphatic exclamation point for an increasingly important theme of her campaign — that Trump represents an existential threat to American democracy.
