The protocol didn't seem to have an effect. "In very severe damage, when towing is required, we don't find significant evidence to follow or not follow our protocol," she said in the webinar. An orca repeatedly rammed a yacht in the Shetland Islands, a sailor told the Guardian. The attack follows a series of orca incidents around the Iberian peninsula. The 72-year-old Dutch physicist, an experienced sailor, said he had heard about orca incidents around Portugal, adding that he found the loud breathing of the orca the "most frightening." While many boat interactions with orcas in the area have been harmless, killer whales have increasingly rammed and even sank boats. The rising number of incidents has left researchers concerned for sailors' safety and the dwindling orca population around the Iberian peninsula.

A former SeaWorld orca trainer spoke to Bloomberg about the rise in orca attacks on boats. When sailors are out at sea, they should remember they are in the orcas' territory, Hargrove said. Given his intimate knowledge of killer whales, Hargrove believes the trend of orcas ramming into vessels is "100% predictable." Comparing orcas hitting boats to when people start "roughhousing" just for fun, it can turn aggressive quickly. In the end, "the insurance company is going to take care of the boat," Hargrove said.
