On Thursday, tropical storm conditions are expected in portions of the northwestern Bahamas. Just one day ago, Hurricane Milton’s tropical storm-force winds extended out 80 miles from the center. This trend is expected to continue until landfall, with Milton expected to bring tropical storm-force winds to much of the Florida Peninsula throughout landfall. Hurricane conditions are expected in some areas beginning Wednesday evening through early Thursday and are possible in other areas on Thursday. CNN —The famed Blue Ridge Parkway – spanning more than 400 miles – remains closed with no reopening date, according to the National Park Service. “The entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia is closed as crews continue their assessment of the damage from Hurricane Helene,” NPS spokesman Mike Litterst told CNN. Blue Ridge Parkway staff and NPS employees from 32 states and the District of Columbia are working in the recovery efforts, Litterst said. “A projected reopening date of any section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina has not yet been established; assessment crews are finishing their work in Virginia,” Litterst said. The parkway was listed as the number one most visited NPS site in 2023, with 16.75 million visits, CNN previously reported.

CNN —The death toll from Helene has risen to at least 225 across six states, according to CNN’s tally, after seven more deaths were announced Saturday in North Carolina. Emergency responders from across the US respond to hurricane-ravaged North Carolina county: Hard-hit Buncombe County, North Carolina, is getting help from several hundred emergency responders from agencies nationwide who were on the ground there by Saturday, including from the New York Fire Department. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has more than 3,000 federal responders on the ground in North Carolina, said MaryAnn Tierney, FEMA’s National Incident Management Assistance team lead. About 562,007 customers in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia were waiting for power to be restored as of Saturday afternoon. CNN —Former President Jimmy Carter, the oldest living president, is hoping to vote for Kamala Harris during the November elections, his grandson said. “I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” the 99-year-old former president said, according to his grandson, Jason Carter, who relayed a conversation Carter had with his son Chip earlier this week to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. CNN has reached out to the Carter Center for a statement. Jason Carter said in May the 39th president is “coming to an end” when providing an update on his health. CNN —William Anders, a NASA astronaut who was part of the 1968 Apollo 8 crew who were the first three people to orbit the moon, has died in a plane crash in Washington state, according to his son, Gregory Anders. Anders served as a fighter pilot in all-weather interception squadrons of the Air Defense Command in California and Iceland, according to NASA and the US Naval Academy. Taken aboard Apollo 8 by William Anders, this iconic picture shows Earth peeking out from beyond the lunar surface as the first crewed spacecraft circumnavigated the Moon, with astronauts Anders, Frank Borman and Jim Lovell aboard. CNN —Constance Glantz had been in a nursing home – in hospice care. No evidence of criminal intent had been found, Chief Deputy Ben Houchin told reporters. She again was pronounced dead, Houchin said later, adding an autopsy was conducted Tuesday morning. CNN —Rescuers are searching for two people in northern Minnesota who went missing after going over Curtain Falls in canoes, according to authorities. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Iron Lake near the border of Canada at 7:21 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release. Two canoes had gone over Curtain Falls in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, the sheriff’s office said. Shortly after midnight, a helicopter was used to rescue one injured person and one uninjured person, according to the sheriff’s office. CNN —Authorities have recovered the body of a fifth victim in the Baltimore bridge collapse five weeks ago, officials said Wednesday. A 213-million-pound cargo vessel slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, crippling the structure and killing six workers repairing potholes on it. The six construction workers were immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Guatemala. “Maryland State Police investigators along with officers from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the FBI responded to the scene and recovered the body of a fifth construction worker inside a red truck,” he added. Attorneys representing the families of two deceased workers and a victim who survived the fall have started their own investigation.

Los Angeles CNN —Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, faces a federal charge of bank fraud after allegedly stealing more than $16 million from Ohtani, a US attorney in Los Angeles announced Thursday. US Attorney Martin Estrada said Mizuhara made unauthorized transfers from Ohtani’s bank account from November 2021 until January 2024. Estrada said Ohtani is “considered a victim in this case,” and there’s no evidence suggesting Ohtani was actively involved. “Our investigation has revealed that due to the position of trust he occupied with Mr. Ohtani, Mr. Mizuhara had unique access to Mr. Ohtani’s finances,” Estrada said. Mizuhara was fired last month after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of stealing from Ohtani and placing bets with a bookmaker who is under federal investigation.

CNN —A former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is in negotiations to plead guilty to federal crimes related to accusations he stole millions from Ohtani and used it for gambling, the New York Times reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter. Ippei Mizuhara was fired last month after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of stealing from Ohtani and placing bets with a bookmaker who is under federal investigation. Ohtani later alleged Mizuhara stole the money from his bank account. “I’m very saddened and shocked that someone who I’ve trusted has done this,” Ohtani, Major League Baseball’s only two-way player, said. Audrii never made it onto the bus, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said. “Audrii should have caught the school bus at her neighborhood bus stop; however, school officials reported to the Sheriff’s Office that the school bus did not pick Audrii up, nor did she report to school,” the sheriff’s office said. CNN —Two police officers and a firefighter were fatally shot and another officer was injured after responding to a domestic incident early Sunday morning in Burnsville, Minnesota, according to local authorities. Burnsville city officials identified the three victims Sunday afternoon as officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, and firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth, 40. “Minnesota mourns with you,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said during the news conference. My heart is with their families today and the entire State of Minnesota stands with Burnsville,” Walz said. He was part of the department’s crisis negotiations team and was also a physical evidence officer, officials said.

CNN —The town manager of Carmel, Maine, has died after saving his 4-year-old son from drowning in an icy pond. Kevin Howell, 51, and his son were crossing a portion of Etna Pond around 6:30 a.m. Friday when they broke through the ice, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post. “The boy ran home, and notified his mother,” the sheriff’s office said. “Detective Norton got the mom back to the house and reunited with her son,” the sheriff’s office said. Howell enjoyed cooking for his family and friends and spending time with his wife and son outdoors, doing actives like skiing, boating, fishing and hiking, the webpage said.
