Read previewA four-day workweek reduces staff turnover, improves employee mental health, and saves money, according to the largest public sector trial held in the UK. On Monday, academics at two British universities — Cambridge and Salford — released their findings from a 15-month trial of a shortened working week. It is the largest public sector trial of the four-day workweek held so far in the UK, involving 697 employees, including office and waste workers. The number of external applicants for open roles also greatly increased, with 76% reporting the four-day week trial as influencing them to apply for open positions. The US, Canada, Ireland, and Germany are among the countries that have trialed the shortened working week.

Employees working four-day weeks told Insider having the extra day off was an adjustment at first. "It's hard to overstate how good it's been," Jo Sims, a senior case manager at AKA Case Management, told Insider, adding: "It's honestly changed my life." Sims said the extra day off had improved her mental health, eased her stress levels, and left her with a new perspective. The study was led by academics from Boston College, the University of Cambridge, and the research organization Autonomy in partnership with the campaign groups 4 Day Week Global and 4 Day Week Campaign. A representative for the 4 Day Week Campaign put Insider in contact with the four employees that are referenced in this article.
"This is a major breakthrough moment for the movement towards a four-day working week," Joe Ryle, Director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, said in a statement on Tuesday. "These incredible results show that the four-day week with no loss of pay really works." 'MORE BUSY, LESS STRESSED'The founder of a craft brewery involved in the trial said the trial encouraged greater productivity in shorter time. Which four days employees worked varied. "That should give us a competitive advantage," a senior manager at an insurance firm in the trial said of four-day weeks.
