Democrats are, meanwhile, coming to terms with the massive fallout of their failure to stop Trump’s return to power, even as they dissolve into self-recrimination. They lack a clear leader to revive their message or a platform of power if Republicans retain control of the House. Establishing dominance over Washington Republicans: Trump has been mostly behind closed doors since his victory rally last week. Trump is promising to return to the volatile foreign policy that defined his first term — and then some. The conundrum facing US allies was laid out by French President Emmanuel Macron, who rode the Trump first-term rollercoaster.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s “decisive leadership” and his “‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.”Some Ukrainians were nonplussed by what they saw as the equivocal support provided by President Joe Biden — despite that totaling some $175 billion since 2022 — and say they remain optimistic Trump could offer a new start. “Poland’s leadership will rise to the occasion.”Freed from the responsibility of having to retain diplomatic ties with Trump, some of Europe’s mayors appeared more willing to speak openly about the president elect. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Trump’s win was “bad news for the world, democracies, Europe, climate, women and Ukraine, a country fighting for our freedom.” She accused Trump of “playing his part” in undermining democracy and the rule of law. “Others will be worried about the future of NATO or tackling the climate crisis.”Beijing most likely sees danger, too, in Trump’s unpredictability as well as his promised 60% tariffs on Chinese goods. But may also see opportunity in what is viewed as his isolationist ability to diminish American influence around the world.

As Election Day approaches, former President Donald Trump has increasingly been warning that if he loses, it will be because of cheating. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday condemned the tone of former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden the night before, arguing that it underscored her campaign’s argument against him. “I think last night, Donald Trump’s event in Madison Square Garden really highlighted a point that I’ve been making throughout this campaign,” Harris told reporters before heading to Michigan. Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico provoked the most backlash. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Trump campaign spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said in a statement to CNN on Sunday night. “Donald Trump spends full time trying to have Americans point their finger at each other, fans the fuel of hate and division.

During a special election in Wisconsin over the summer, a group of partisan poll watchers showed up at a handful of precincts in Glendale, a suburb of Milwaukee, and created chaos by contesting every absentee ballot that was cast. After they were reminded repeatedly about the rules against making meritless ballot challenges, the groups of poll watchers “turned disruptive,” according to Glendale Mayor Bryan Kennedy. They didn’t, and the police were called,” Kennedy told CNN, adding that once police arrived, the observers left peacefully. Some context: Poll watchers are a key component of election transparency, and both Democrats and Republicans have built out their ranks of volunteers and lawyers to observe polling places and vote counting centers. Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at SoFi Stadium on August 09, 2023 in Inglewood, California. In 2020, men were almost evenly divided between Donald Trump and Joe Biden — a remarkable shift from 2016, when they backed Mr. Trump by 11 points. That swing was decisive enough to put Mr. Biden in the White House. For the latest Times Opinion focus group, we gathered nine men who voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 to see how their views about him evolved since then. Most of them could see a difference Mr. Biden had made in their communities — roads paved, highways built, fiber-optic networks laid — and in the way people around them spoke.
