Elon Musk wins big by betting on Trump

Elon Musk used his money, power, and influence to help reelect former President Donald Trump. Musk has spent months strengthening his ties to Trump, using his platform on X to advocate for him and investing over $130 million in pro-Trump efforts. Some suggested Musk's actions might be a risk-hedging strategy to secure Trump's backing if he wins. AdvertisementWhat a Trump win means for Musk's business empireAside from direct influence within the government, a Trump presidency could lead to a lot of wins for Musk's business empire, which includes Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, and X. Coglianese said Musk was also "banking on a president who will want to or be willing to repay Musk for his loyalty."

Musk could gain influence at the federal level if Trump is elected president. It's unclear what a Harris administration would mean for Musk and his business empire. Musk under HarrisWhile Musk could gain power, government contracts, and looser regulations under Trump, it's unclear how he might be impacted under a Harris administration. For X, which Musk has branded as the platform for freedom of speech, Gordon said a Harris administration could pressure it to ban material labeled as "misinformation." CNN —A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous “L’empire des lumières” series is estimated to sell for more than $95 million at Christie’s New York this fall, a sum that would break the Surrealist artist’s record at auction and represent a major win for the auction house after softened sales across the industry. “L’empire des lumières,” from 1954, is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. René Magritte's L'empire des lumières Courtesy of Chrstie’sThe present painting comes from the estate of the late Mica Ertegun, an interior designer who was married to Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records and a prolific art collector. “But of all the works she lived with, Magritte’s ‘L’empire des lumières’ most nearly captures her aesthetic philosophy in its balance and restraint,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art, said in a statement. Last week, the auction house revealed it is acquiring Gooding & Company, a collector car auctioneer, 17 years after exiting the car market.

A former Kansas police chief linked to the Aug. 11, 2023, raid of a local newspaper was formally charged with one count of interference with the judicial process. She collapsed and died the day after the raid, and Meyer blamed her death on the stress of the raid. Joan Meyer, co-owner of the Marion County Record, swears at police officers in her home on Aug. 11, 2023. Marion County Attorney Joel Ensey, however, withdrew the search warrants after determining that "insufficient evidence exists to establish a legally sufficient nexus between this alleged crime and the places searched and the items seized." Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett and Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson said in a 124-page report that the newspaper's staff had committed no crimes.

Two special prosecutors said Monday they will file a criminal obstruction of justice charge against a former Kansas police chief who directed warrant searches of a publisher and his newsroom over its retrieval of public information. As of Monday, prosecutors hadn't filed any criminal charges against former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody. It was not immediately clear if they would be seeking a felony or misdemeanor charge against Cody. The special prosecutors are working with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which stepped in at the request of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. “The findings will be incorporated into charges which will be sought in Marion County District Court,” the report said.

New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. A Chinese entertainment magnate who pleaded guilty to making more than $10,000 in illegal political campaign donations to three candidates, agreed in federal court on Thursday to give up his green card and leave the United States. Hui Qin, 55, had been in jail in Brooklyn since his arrest in October. One of the candidates was Mayor Eric Adams, according to two people familiar with the case, though none of the campaigns knew the donations were illegal, prosecutors said. In March, Mr. Qin pleaded guilty to charges of making campaign contributions in the names of others, immigration fraud and producing false identification. His company collapsed, he was the target of lawsuits and his wife, Emma Liu, left him, Mr. Mazurek said.

The organization told CNBC that it did not dispatch pilots for seeding operations before or during the storm that struck the UAE on Tuesday. Omar AlYazeedi, deputy director general of the NCM, said that the institution "did not conduct any seeding operations during this event." He added, "One of the basic principles of cloud seeding is that you have to target clouds in its early stage before it rains, if you have a severe thunderstorm situation then it is too late to conduct any seeding operation." The NCM denial follows an earlier Bloomberg report, in which Ahmed Habib, a specialist meteorologist, had said that the Tuesday rains had stemmed partly from cloud seeding. Habib later told CNBC that six pilots had flown missions as part of regular protocol, but had not seeded any clouds.

Rising global temperatures have added a strain on regions like the Middle East, which is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The United Arab Emirates averages less than 200 millimeters of rainfall a year, in stark contrast to London's average of 1,051 millimeters and Singapore's 3,012 millimeters. Extreme heat could exacerbate water scarcity issues and impose restraints on agricultural productivity in the country. The United Nations projects that by 2025, 1.8 billion people will face absolute water scarcity across the world. With water scarcity at the core of the region's challenges, the Gulf state implemented a program aimed at addressing this issue.

How does a desert turn green?

A transformation is unfolding in the United Arab Emirates, where approximately 80% of the country's land is desert. The UAE has introduced measures to combat desertification by turning its arid landscapes green. The Middle East is home to 12 of the 17 most "water-stressed" countries of the world, and the UAE receives less than 200 mm of rainfall a year. Abdulla Al Mandous, director general at the UAE National Centre of Meteorology, says that the country has invested more than $20 million in cloud seeding research — a process designed to enhance rainfall. CNBC went inside the National Centre of Meteorology in Abu Dhabi to find out how the cloud seeding process works.

Major auction houses are hedging their bets in the fall season of sales that begins Monday, offering fat guarantees to sellers to secure their works — and pricing some of their top items more conservatively after the spring season demonstrated weakness in the blazing-hot $60 billion art market. And now, sellers are trying to anticipate how the uncertainty of a new war in the Middle East will affect them. Auctioneers at the three rival companies, Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips, have been digging deeper into private collections for one-off paintings that might spice up their modern and contemporary art sales, given the thinning availability of estates to draw from (typically driven by deaths and divorces). “We have built the sale in a very old-school way,” said Alex Rotter, chairman of Christie’s departments overseeing 20th- and 21st-century art, who said that his team shopped around individual collectors to acquire works by Joan Mitchell ($25 million to 35 million), Claude Monet ($65 million) and Francis Bacon ($50 million). “We went for paintings that would create the most buzz.”

Marion Police Department Chief Gideon Cody turned in his badge on Monday less than two months after he signed off on the police raid of the Marion County Record in August. To obtain the search warrants for the raid, Cody previously argued that the newspaper broke the state's identity theft laws to obtain a local business owner's driving records.

The police chief who led a highly criticized raid of a small Kansas newspaper has been suspended, the mayor confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday. Marion Mayor Dave Mayfield in a text said he suspended Chief Gideon Cody on Thursday. Legal experts believe the raid on the newspaper violated a federal privacy law or a state law shielding journalists from having to identify sources or turn over unpublished material to law enforcement. Video of the raid on the home of publisher Eric Meyer shows how distraught his 98-year-old mother became as officers searched through their belongings. Another reporter last month filed a federal lawsuit against the police chief over the raid.
