It’s a mystery that took more than 47 years to solve: The true identity of a woman known as Jane Seneca Doe. Jane Seneca Doe artist rendering Courtesy of Carl KoppelmanOn October 2, 1976, the body of a young woman was found murdered and tossed in a ditch along Highway 6 in an unincorporated area of Grundy County, Illinois, near the village of Seneca. After nearly two months of unsuccessful attempts to identify the Jane Doe, she was buried in an unmarked grave at a cemetery in Braceville, Illinois, where she remained until 2018. Margaret Press, who founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017, said Jane Seneca Doe was at the top of her list of cases she wanted to see identified. According to a press release on the Grundy County website, Jane Seneca Doe was identified on June 27, 2024, as a woman named JoAnn 'Vickie' Smith.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fabric and crafts retailer Joann has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as consumers continue to cut back on discretionary spending. In a Monday release, the Hudson, Ohio-based company said that it expected to emerge from bankruptcy as early as the end of next month. Following this process, Joann will likely become privately-owned by certain lenders and industry parties, the company added — meaning its shares would no longer be publicly traded on stock exchanges. Joann's more than 800 stores and its website will continue to operate normally during the bankruptcy process. A decade later Joann, still majority owned by Leonard Green & Partners, went public in an initial public offering at $12 a share.

In a statement Monday, the Ohio-based company said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and has secured $132 million in fresh funding that helps reduce its debt in half, which had ballooned to $1 billion. However, that has since faded, and inflation has soared, prompting customers to spend less on non-essential items. How paycheck withholdings workWhen you start a new job, you fill out Form W-4, which tells employers how much to withhold from each paycheck for federal income taxes. You calculate your effective tax rate by dividing your total tax (line 24) by taxable income (line 15). If your 2024 earnings are similar to 2023, you'll want your federal paycheck withholdings at roughly last year's effective tax rate, Loyd said. For example, if your gross paycheck is $1,000 and last year's effective tax rate was 12%, you'll want about $120 withheld in federal taxes, he said.
