Over the summer, Florida’s Broward County Public Schools made the decision to ban students from using cellphones and other communication devices for the entire school day. It's a particularly sensitive topic in Broward County after the 2018 Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which is in the district. Carline Dumoulin, a mother of two students at Broward’s Cypress Bay High School, is one of those signatories. Broward County school board member Debra Hixon was present at the meeting where the rule was approved, but had left before the vote. Last year, a video of several students fighting at West Broward High School circulated online, gaining thousands of views on X.

Now, anti-Trump statues are popping up in more US cities. The latest appeared in Philadelphia’s Maja Park Wednesday morning, where someone positioned a roughly eight-foot statue of Donald Trump directly behind a sculpture of a nude woman. A seemingly identical Trump statue popped up in downtown Portland, Oregon, last weekend. In his first television interview since leaving Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia explained the role of the Spanish government in his departure from the Latin American country. Venezuela’s opposition and multiple Latin American leaders refused to recognize Maduro’s victory, which sparked deadly protests during which thousands were arrested. On September 18, the Spanish Senate approved by majority a motion presented by the Popular Party urging the Spanish government to recognize González as the elected president of Venezuela. Regarding the official figures, González says that “there is no evidence to prove they [Maduro’s regime] won.”The opposition candidate said that an inauguration in exile has not been considered.

CNN —A group of about 100 volunteer helicopter pilots is flying around 400 relief missions a day over North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene, one of its co-founders says. The pilots also perform helicopter medical evacuations and search and rescue operations, according to the organization’s Facebook page and website. At least 117 people have died from Helene in North Carolina, according to a CNN tally. In a remote North Carolina town, the team encountered an elderly couple sitting in front of a damaged brick storefront. It was taken outside of Whitson Furniture and General Store in Green Mountain, North Carolina, which took a hit from the storm.

Ted Purdom, from San Anselmo, California, graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in English and enrolled in an overseas language program, aiming to learn Spanish. He ended up in Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic islands off the east coast of Spain, for the nine-month program. A friend told him about another program that placed American “language coaches” in Spain, called “Auxiliares de Conversación,” (conversation assistants), run by the Spanish Ministry of Education. So that November he opened The Bridge English Academy in Manacor, converting a former wine store into classrooms to give English language courses to locals. Then there’s the fact that the islanders’ first language isn’t Spanish, but Mallorquin, a dialect of Catalan.

The St. Ann Police Department received a tip around 1 p.m. Tuesday through the Courage2Report tip line about a threat to Ritenour High School in St. Louis. Police found the teen sitting in a car in the parking lot of Husky Academy, about a mile away from the high school with a fully loaded gun. The video the teen posted to social media panned to show an unoccupied police vehicle parked next to the teen’s car. The teen, a former student with the Ritenour School District, was charged with first-degree terrorist threat, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of weapons. A police officer in Ohio was indicted on Tuesday on murder charges in the fatal shooting last year of a pregnant Black woman in the parking lot of a supermarket. The officer, Connor Grubb, 29, faces four counts each of murder and felonious assault and two counts of involuntary manslaughter, Franklin County court records show. Police body-camera footage from Aug. 24, 2023, showed two unidentified officers walk up to Ms. Young’s vehicle and tell her not to leave. Within a few moments, Ms. Young is seen in the video turning the wheel, and the car inches forward, appearing to hit a police officer. One of the officers then fired a single a shot through the windshield, striking Ms. Young, the video shows.

The letter was addressed to someone named Lee from someone named Chris. But it was Suzanne Flament-Smith, 46, of Tampa, Fla., who found it on Wednesday. By then, the storm had passed Florida, leaving a trail of debris in its path. “There was so much trash,” she said, “water bottles, sunscreen bottles, Crocs, a lot of random articles, too.”
