Katrina Adams was honored as the IOC’s Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champion for 2023. ‘Only just now getting here’Getting closer to this landmark of gender equality is “incredibly important,” Olympic weightlifter Jourdan Delacruz told CNN. “Just seeing all the love pour into women’s sport, it just opens up all these avenues. “If you don’t have female decision makers in the room that understand female athletes, it’s very hard to make decisions,” she said. And we know that without conscious, intentional action, to move towards gender equality, we consistently see regression.”

CNN —Confronted with a barrage of negative social media posts from former President Donald Trump aimed at his wife, second gentleman Doug Emhoff eschewed machismo or defensiveness. “That’s all he got?” he said Tuesday of the attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, the new and historic presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. And Monday, he leaned into a cheerleader role as he introduced the vice president at her Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters. So I think that gives you a fairly good indication of if he now would move into a precedent-setting first gentleman role,” McBride said. “This first gentleman role is being a supportive spouse and understanding better than anyone the administration’s goals and how to go about best achieving that,” she said.

CNN —First lady Jill Biden watched on Wednesday night as President Joe Biden told the American people it was time to “pass the torch” on his political career. Then she got on a plane, flying nearly 4,000 miles to Paris, where another torch was being passed. Jill Biden is arriving in Paris at a monumental time for her husband’s presidency. That unity will be on display at the Olympic Games, a rare moment in intensely polarized times. In one tangible signal of how plans for the Paris trip changed since the president’s decision to drop his reelection bid, Jill Biden had been scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Americans living abroad in Paris.

His tone was wistful and his speech was an early farewell. “It’s been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years,” he said. Sitting behind the Resolute Desk and surrounded by photos of his family, Mr. Biden ticked through the accomplishments of his term, ranging from the choice of the first Black woman to be a Supreme Court justice to pulling the country out of a paralyzing pandemic. He expressed gratitude to the American people for allowing a “kid with a stutter” from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pa., to reach the pinnacle of American politics. Just beyond the camera, dozens of aides and several members of his family, including Jill Biden, the first lady, watched as Mr. Biden said he would walk away from the office they had worked to help him reach for decades.

CNN —US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has tendered her resignation amid scrutiny of security lapses related to the recent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, sources tell CNN. Biden said a new Secret Service director will appointed soon. “I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time,” Cheatle said Monday. “We have to rebuild the American people’s faith and trust in the Secret Service as an agency. Cheatle was appointed by Biden to lead the Secret Service in 2022.

Ms. Cheatle joined the Secret Service in 1995 and spent more than two decades there before leaving in 2021 to lead the North American security operations for PepsiCo. Ms. Cheatle, 53, is the second woman to lead the Secret Service. By the time she had graduated from college four years later, Ms. Cheatle had applied for a job at the Secret Service, the newspaper said. At the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, two Republican senators chastised Ms. Cheatle in a confrontation that was captured on video. An internal Secret Service investigation of the shooting is underway, as are several inquiries in Congress.

Kimberly A. Cheatle, the Secret Service director, faced grueling questions from lawmakers on Monday about the adequacy of her agency’s preparation and response to the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump this month. Ms. Cheatle did not directly respond to many of the lawmakers’ questions. But during her testimony, she rebuffed queries related to the service’s efforts to recruit more women, the actions of a previous director who oversaw the agency during an assassination attempt and a comparison between staffing for Mr. Trump’s event and one held on the same day by the first lady, Jill Biden. While some information about the attempt and the law enforcement response remains unknown, here is the context behind some of the exchanges. Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

Read previewSince late Wednesday, President Joe Biden has been hunkered down in Delaware, recovering from his latest bout with COVID-19. "It's like they don't know he's Irish," a Biden family confidant recently told the Post. And it comes weeks after Hunter Biden — who for years has been political fodder for Republicans — was convicted on felony gun charges. Biden has repeatedly reiterated that he has no plans to exit the race, and his family has stood with him on that decision. But should the president change course, the family would also support that decision, according to the Post.

WASHINGTON — Members of President Joe Biden's family have discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like, according to two people familiar with the discussions. Biden's family members have specifically discussed how he would want to end his re-election bid on his own timing and with a carefully calculated plan in place. White House spokesman Andrew Bates denied that any such exit discussions are happening amongst the family. Among the reports: that longtime speechwriter and historian Jon Meacham was penning Biden's exit remarks. Amid the turmoil the Biden campaign sent out talking points to Democrats, according to a Democratic strategies: "President Biden has not spoken to congressional leadership today.

Deputy White House chief of staff Annie Tomasini, a longtime aide to the Bidens, joins Donilon and Ricchetti in forming a protective bubble around the president. “The phones just kind of stopped ringing,” is how one senior Democrat put it. “Staff in general are just over the leadership here,” one White House official said. Inside the White House, senior administration officials are bracing for Republicans to call for Biden to resign the presidency if he doesn’t seek reelection. With Biden’s political future on the brink, the White House is fielding a steady stream of letters, telephone calls and message from Americans, too, from Democratic voters like Terri and John Hale.

The GOP-led House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas Wednesday for three White House aides, requesting depositions to discuss President Joe Biden's cognitive state. The subpoenas, first reported by Axios, are for first lady Jill Biden's senior adviser Anthony Bernal, White House deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and White House senior adviser Ashley Williams. "President Biden is clearly unfit for office, yet his staff are trying to hide the truth from the American people," he added. When reached for comment, White House spokesperson Ian Sams criticized Comer and called the subpoenas a "baseless political stunt intended for him to get media attention instead of engage in legitimate oversight." The three aides were previously asked to appear before the committee as part of the Biden classified documents investigation, but the committee says the White House blocked their appearances.

Even so, four sources close to the Biden family said there is no active effort to shake up staffing right now. Hunter Biden's appearance in White House meetings this week was just one instance of what is expected to be the deeper Biden family involvement. From the view of some Biden aides, the family is seizing on an opportunity to try to settle old scores. President Joe Biden's family is attempting to become more involved over his campaign and White House affairs as their anger with his staff spills into public view. Hunter Biden's stepped-up involvement has confounded some White House staff members and revived a longtime sore spot.

CNN —Amid the ongoing fallout from Joe Biden’s debate performance, talk in many top Democratic circles has already moved to who Kamala Harris’ running mate would be. A more open race, these top Democrats hope, would be for Harris’ running mate, with a focus on leading Democratic governors. “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November,” he said. The anti-Trump coalition cannot afford to discount the strengths of the nominated Democratic running mate and current vice president. Harris’ answer: She’d turn around and say to him, “Why are you being so weird?”As vice president, Harris has tended to be known more for her word salads than sharp elbows like that.
