"Blended-wing" aircraft could be the future of commercial aviation. Airbus and startups JetZero and Natilus lead the development of these more efficient flying wings. Among the most likely concepts is a "blended-wing" body aircraft, which combines the fuselage and wing into one. A handful of companies have announced plans to build these unique vessels by the 2030s, including startups JetZero and Natilus and long-standing planemaker Airbus. The company has decades of experience designing commercial airplanes — leading the industry with its best-selling Airbus A320 family of similar capacity.

CNN —Spurred by increasing global demand for air travel, aviation emissions have been rising faster than those from rail, road, or shipping in recent decades. The Natilus Horizon passenger plane aims to reduce emissions by 50%, and increase payload by 40%, due to its blended-wing body shape. Matyushev says the blended wing body design originated in the 1990s from McDonnell Douglas, a major American aerospace manufacturer that merged with Boeing in 1997. Boeing never commercialized a blended wing plane, but studied the concept and produced an unmanned prototype, the X-48. “One of the challenges with the blended wing body design is stability and control,” he explains.

A startup planemaker announced a 200-passenger "blended wing body" plane to rival Airbus and Boeing. Natilus said its Horizon plane would be up to 50% more fuel efficient per passenger. Natilus joins a growing list of BWB plane developers. Airbus announced its BWB jetliner in 2020, while JetZero unveiled its "Pathfinder" widebody BWB design in April.

California aerospace startup JetZero got the green light to fly its new "Pathfinder" aircraft. The composite technology makes this new load bearing possible, Bragg told BI. "The product is essentially a new airframe and flight controls married to existing systems already certified for commercial flight," JetZero told BI. And most of those 200+ passengers would be in the middle section without a window, which Bragg told BI could put off travelers. Later, American aircraft industrialist and designer Jack Northrop built his famous "Flying Wing" aircraft in the 1940s, laying the framework for the eventual B-2 bomber.

Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is a type of alternative jet fuel that can curb carbon emissions by up to 80%. The main reason for the slow adoption is that it’s still more expensive – between 1.5 to 6 times pricier than regular jet fuel. Boeing is not out of the race either, but doesn’t see a hydrogen long-haul plane as around the corner. On medium- and long-haul flights, we don’t see it as a direct source of propulsion until 2040. We would need to see magnitude-order changes [in batteries] for us to consider those for long-haul flights.

In an interview, O'Leary said this would not deter JetZero and its radical design. The Air Force said materials and manufacturing advances have made production more attainable. Whereas Boeing aimed to commission new engines for its abandoned project, JetZero says aerodynamic savings allow it to exploit existing models. Capital Alpha Partners analyst Byron Callan said the decision to back JetZero suggested Air Force "frustration" with traditional aerospace companies' use of cash to favor shareholders rather than bigger developmental risks. "One way to potentially change behaviors is to award contracts to smaller firms like JetZero," he wrote.
