Circuit Court of Appeals said plaintiff Corey McNellis could proceed with a bias lawsuit against the Douglas County School District because school administrators allegedly cited his “religious comments” about the play as the basis for his 2020 firing. Lawyers for McNellis and the school district did not immediately respond to requests for comment. During the email exchange with the theater director, McNellis wrote: “As a Christian I would love to collaborate with your project. The 10th Circuit agreed with Moore that McNellis had not made out plausible retaliation and free-speech claims, but said his bias claims could go forward. The case is McNellis v. It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy. Marcos said that he did not understand Duterte’s apology but that it was “her prerogative” to make it, local media reported.

CNN —Filipino pastor Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, who is wanted by both the FBI and local law enforcement officers on sexual abuse and human trafficking charges, has been arrested weeks after a standoff with the police. The arrest concludes a fraught showdown between the pastor’s supporters and police who had surrounded a compound in the country’s south where Quiboloy had holed up. ET), the detainees were issued a 24-hour ultimatum to come out from the church’s sprawling 30-hectare (75 acre) compound. Nearly 2,000 officers surrounded the church compound where Quiboloy was believed to be hiding. “Although he is a very prominent person… we will treat him like any other arrested person and will respect his rights.

CNNOver the last few decades, a growing number of Christians have left traditional, predominantly White evangelical churches. The post-evangelical movement predates former President Donald Trump’s political rise, but has been accelerated by his alliance with White conservative evangelical leaders. White evangelicals have been a key part of the Republican coalition since the 1980s. The exit polls estimated that 26% of 2016 voters and 28% of 2020 voters were White evangelicals. Still, Trump has maintained overwhelming support among White evangelicals since consolidating their support during the 2016 Republican primary.

At the height of their careers, the Gao Brothers created provocative sculptures of Mao in a country notoriously sensitive about its former ruler’s legacy. Due to the “deteriorating environment” in China, Gao Zhen relocated to New York two years ago when his son, an American citizen born in the US, reached school age, Gao Qiang said. “Before he set off, his friends and family — myself included — had all reminded him to consider whether it was safe to go,” Gao Qiang said. “Our father’s death was a devastating disaster for our family.” Gao Zhen told the Southern People Weekly, a once-outspoken news outlet, in 2010. Gao Zhen’s detention shows that freedom of expression in China has shrunk significantly compared to a decade ago, Gao Qiang said.

Posts with obviously AI-generated images and confusing captions sometimes receive thousands of likes and hundreds of comments and shares. “The Facebook Feed … at times shows users AI-generated images even when they do not follow the Pages posting those images. Experts who track this kind of online behavior say there are likely several different kinds of actors behind the Facebook spam, with varying motives. A letter written in 1945 from a naval base in Virginia wound up in a glass bottle more than 800 miles away in Florida, where it was found last week — nearly eight decades later — after Hurricane Debby swept a swath of the state. The letter was addressed to someone named Lee from someone named Chris. But it was Suzanne Flament-Smith, 46, of Tampa, Fla., who found it on Wednesday. By then, the storm had passed Florida, leaving a trail of debris in its path. “There was so much trash,” she said, “water bottles, sunscreen bottles, Crocs, a lot of random articles, too.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is dominating the charts again after earning $28.3 million on Friday. Rivals are putting the Disney release at a 55% drop though, demonstrating that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has immense appeal beyond Marvel diehards. “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks to blast past that figure in only in its second weekend and there’s no real signs of slowing down after that. On Monday, after the National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner of the election, thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets. The presidents of Colombia and Brazil — both close allies of the Venezuelan government — have urged Maduro to release detailed vote counts. He added that Mexico expects “that the evidence, the electoral results records, be presented.”Pressure has been building on the president since the election. Opinion | The Christian Case Against Trump
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Eliza Griswold | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Days later, at the Republican National Convention, the evangelist Franklin Graham endorsed Mr. Trump from the stage, saying that “God spared his life.”But the idea of Mr. Trump as chosen by God has infuriated those evangelicals who believe that he stands in direct opposition to their faith. Their existence highlights an often-overlooked fact about the American religious landscape: Evangelicals are not a monolith. The troubling ascendancy of white Christian nationalism has galvanized evangelicals for whom following Jesus demands speaking truth to power, as well as building the kingdom of heaven on earth in actionable ways. Although this broader evangelical movement is often referred to as the evangelical left, it adheres to no party. “This isn’t about being a Democrat or a Republican,” Jim Wallis, an evangelical Christian pastor, author and justice activist, told me.
