Grateful Dead founding member and bassist Phil Lesh died Friday morning, according to a post on his official Instagram account. Shortly afterward, the band renamed itself the Grateful Dead, with Lesh on bass and Garcia on guitar. The Dead fused rock, jazz and folk, going on to become one of the most influential bands in American history. Known for being a virtuosic bassist, Lesh is credited with redefining the sound of the bass and heavily influencing the Grateful Dead’s sound. He was widely recognized by other artists as a defining rock bass player.

NEW YORK (AP) — A day after Taylor Swift made music history at the Grammy Awards, a band formed long before she was born made their own history: The Grateful Dead have broken the record for the most Top 40 albums to chart on the Billboard 200. The Grateful Dead pulled out ahead of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra with 59 total Top 40 entries on the chart Monday following the No. 25 debut of their archival release “Dave’s Picks, Volume 49: Frost Amphitheatre, Stanford U., Palo Alto, CA (4/27/85 & 4/28/85).” Elvis and Sinatra are stuck at 58 albums apiece. It's a remarkable run, made even more special since the group disbanded following the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995. Forty-one of the band's 59 entries in the Top 40 have happened since 2012, thanks to the popularity of the series of archival albums compiled by David Lemieux.

“Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,” the hall said Saturday, a day after Wenner's comments were published in a New York Times interview. Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone in 1967 and served as its editor or editorial director until 2019. He also co-founded the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was launched in 1987. Last year, Rolling Stone magazine published its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and ranked Gaye's “What's Going On” No. ___This story has been updated to correct that Wenner was a co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine and not the founder.

Fans of the Grateful Dead are saying goodbye to the band this weekend. The day Garcia died in 1995, the Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir gave a concert near Boston. One fan, Albie Cullen, recalled that the encore felt like an emotional send-off for Garcia and the band. It was another emotional send-off, but it wasn’t the end, either. During Dead & Company’s eight-year run, the band once again became a cultural touchstone.

The first time Albie Cullen said goodbye to the Grateful Dead was on Aug. 9, 1995. A co-worker told Cullen, an attorney for a Boston-area music label, that Jerry Garcia, the Dead’s iconic lead guitarist, had died that day. The Grateful Dead had replaced departed members before, but this was different. With his rootsy tenor, Santa-gone-gray beard and unmistakable plucking, Garcia had defined a touring juggernaut and its vibrant subculture, which had become synonymous with the ’60s. The band’s four surviving original members agreed they would never use the name “Grateful Dead” without Garcia.
