The New England Patriots fired head coach Jerod Mayo on Sunday, the team announced. The Patriots finished 3-14 in his lone season in charge. Mayo was the Patriots’ inside linebackers coach from 2019 to 2023. New England won its season finale against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, but the win was costly, dropping the Patriots from the first pick in the upcoming NFL draft to fourth. Mayo made waves earlier in the season when, after the team’s sixth straight loss, he labeled his roster as “soft.”“We’re a soft football team across the board,” Mayo said in October.

— The New England Patriots are making a change at head coach, splitting with Jerod Mayo just one year after he replaced Bill Belichick. The Patriots are expected to begin their search for a new head coach immediately, and, according to league sources, the early signs point to one person. During his on-field speech at halftime, Vrabel, still the Titans head coach, even said, “We’ve got a game to win,” in reference to the Patriots. He spent five years as a position coach with the Patriots and only ever worked for one coach: Belichick. Sources from within the Patriots’ previous regime expressed skepticism that Mayo was ready to be a head coach.

CNN —The New England Patriots fired head coach Jerod Mayo on Sunday, announcing the move just after team’s final game and leaving the Patriots searching for a new head coach for the second time in two offseasons. Mayo was fired after he led the team to a 4-13 record in his lone season at the helm, replacing the legendary Bill Belichick. Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced the decision following the team’s 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in the final week of the NFL regular season. “I appreciate all his hard work and hope the experiences gained will help him in the future, as I still believe he will be a successful head coach in this league. The Patriots join the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints as franchises that will be looking for a new head coach.

CNN —Authorities in Maryland are searching for a man facing several weapons charges after a colorful arsenal of firearms, including illegal “ghost guns,” was found in his home. A later search found multiple 3D-printed “ghost guns” without serial numbers, semi-automatic rifles, handguns and shotguns. The use of ghost guns is on the rise across the country with the Biden administration telling the Supreme Court that police departments have faced an “explosion of crimes involving ghost guns” in recent years. In 2017, police submitted about 1,600 ghost guns recovered at crime scenes for tracing. The Biden administration has tightened regulation on ghost guns as part of a series of actions related to gun safety.

BOSTON (AP) — Bill O’Brien will be the new head coach at Boston College, opting to return to his hometown for a top job instead of taking the offensive coordinator position at Ohio State he accepted just last month, a person with direct knowledge of the move told The Associated Press on Friday. The Boston native, who was the New England Patriots offensive coordinator last season, replaces Jeff Hafley, who left Chestnut Hill to be defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Since then, he has worked for Alabama and the Patriots as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Patriots went 4-13 last season and fired Bill Belichick, replacing him with Jerod Mayo. When the Eagles opened this season 1-3, Hafley’s job was in jeopardy; five straight wins earned them another bowl berth.
