After Stanford, next on the list is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with 17 athletes, and the University of Southern California (USC) with 16. Ledecky earned a silver medal as part of the U.S. women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay Thursday night at the Paris Games, giving her 13 Olympic medals throughout her illustrious career. On Wednesday, Ledecky took gold in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle, her eighth Olympic gold medal and 12th overall, which tied her with Americans Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin. She is the heavy favorite to win her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in that event Saturday night. With one more gold, Ledecky will tie Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for the most gold medals for any female Olympian in history.

Ledecky, 27, has reigned in the event, then, for more than half her life. In winning her first gold in Paris and her 12th Olympic medal overall — tied for the most by an American female swimmer with Jenny Thompson — she reaffirmed her credentials in one of sports’ more exclusive clubs: Were the swimmers with the 20 fastest times in the 1,500 to all gather at the pool, Ledecky would be racing alone, which, to be fair, is what it looks like on television.

Then it bounded from Titmus to McIntosh and back to Titmus, who on Saturday did not lower her mark. She swam a more than two seconds slower than her scorching record time but still fended off the other seven women in the pool, including the best distance freestyler ever.
