On Jan. 18, 2022, covidtests.gov went live, a day ahead of schedule.
Many people, eager to resume social contact with some assurance they were not spreading the disease, had been scrambling for tests, which were in short supply in many areas of the country.
Tests started showing up in people’s mailboxes within days, and less than a month after the launch of the site, almost two-thirds of all households in the U.S. had requested them.
