New York CNN —Two veteran writers who resigned from The Washington Post over its non-endorsement decision are joining The Atlantic. Robert Kagan and Danielle Allen are coming aboard as contributing writers, The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg said Friday. Kagan, a Post opinion editor-at-large and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, resigned within minutes of learning the news. More than 250,000 Post customers cancelled their subscriptions in the wake of the non-endorsement, according to reporting by NPR and the Post. For The Atlantic, the Post imbroglio is also an opportunity to attract talent.

The Atlantic magazine has found itself in Elon Musk’s crosshairs after it fact-checked a fake image he shared that depicted an article with a headline that never actually ran in the publication. The statement did not mention Musk by name. According to The Atlantic, it is one of several notable instances in the last several years in which faked images of articles from the magazine have gone viral. Both Musk’s and the user’s posts with the fake article were later marked with “Community Note” that clarified that the image was “not a real article.” The Community Note also attributed the edited image to the user and said it was “a satirical edit/photoshop of another article.” Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Forbes reported that in August, Musk reshared a post including a manipulated headline that resembled the British newspaper The Telegraph.

New York CNN —The Atlantic is doing something exceedingly unusual for a magazine in 2024: increasing the number of issues it prints. Most of those subscribers receive both the print and digital editions of the magazine, and Goldberg has been eager to expand its print frequency. “We want to meet our readers where they are, and our readers love the print magazine,” he said. “The greatness of print and especially a print magazine is that it sits still for you,” Goldberg said. “I’ve never believed that resting on our laurels was an option, for more than a long weekend,” Goldberg told The Atlantic’s staff in a memo.

PBS announced Wednesday that Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor in chief of The Atlantic, would be the next moderator of “Washington Week,” the Friday evening public affairs show that is a staple among policymakers in the nation’s capital.
