CNN —An alleged leader from Japan’s Yakuza crime syndicates has pleaded guilty to trafficking nuclear materials from Myanmar as part of a global web of trades in drugs, weapons and laundered cash, according to the US Department of Justice. The 60-year-old Japanese national on Wednesday pleaded guilty in a New York court to conspiring with a network of associates to traffic the nuclear materials out of Myanmar, it said. He also admitted to international narcotics trafficking and weapons charges. A year later, US authorities arrested Ebisawa on charges of plotting to distribute drugs in the United States and purchase American-made surface-to-air missiles. The country is awash with natural resources such as rare-earth metals and other materials vital for civilian and military technology, including uranium.

Fittingly named Hemsworth, the spider spans 9.2 centimeters (about 3.6 inches) from foot to foot, according to the Australian Reptile Park. He is the biggest spider,” said the park’s spider keeper Emma Teni, in a video posted on its official Facebook page. The spider Hemsworth was handed in at one of the park’s drop-off locations in Newcastle, a coastal city around 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Sydney. According to the Australian Museum, the average length of a funnel-web spider’s body is 1 to 5 centimeters, with male spiders typically smaller than females. Only male funnel-web spiders are milked as they are about six times more venomous than females.

Hong Kong CNN —Azerbaijan’s leader has accused Moscow of carrying out a “cover up” over a passenger jet crash last month that claimed 38 lives, as relations sour between the two neighbors. The airspace above Grozny, the capital city of the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, was only closed after the plane was hit, Aliyev alleged. Putin said Russia’s air defense systems were active when the plane attempted to land in Grozny, according to the Kremlin, and that the area was being attacked by Ukrainian combat drones. People from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were on board the plane, which was a Brazilian-made Embraer 190. The data has been sent to the Kazakh authorities investigating the crash, according to Reuters.

Tokyo CNN —A bluefin tuna about the size of a motorcycle has been sold for $1.3 million (207 million yen) at Japan’s most prestigious fish market, setting the second highest price on record during its new year auction. The highest bid on record is $3.1 million (333.6 million yen) for a 278-kilogram tuna in 2019.
