Gray Media , owner of local TV stations and digital assets serving 113 TV markets? The bearish sentiment on the industry has been pretty straightforward: as more people cancel traditional pay TV, fewer households watch broadcast TV, opting instead for streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission mandates the total number of TV stations owned by any company can cover a maximum of 39% of the U.S. Tegna now owns local rights for the WNBA's Indiana Fever and the NHL's Seattle Kraken. In the House of Psychiatry, a Jarring Tale of Violence

The annual gathering of the American Psychiatric Association is a dignified and collegial affair, full of scholarly exchanges, polite laughter and polite applause. Then his wrists and ankles were cuffed to the sides of a stretcher, and his pants were yanked down. They gave him injections of Haldol, an antipsychotic medication he had repeatedly tried to refuse, as he howled in protest. One recent study, using 2017 data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, estimated the number of restraints per year at more than 44,000. Researchers who surveyed patients about restraint and seclusion have found that a large portion, 25 to 47 percent , met criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lance Fensterman, CEO of Fanatics Events and the former president of ReedPop — where he produced pop culture events like New York Comic-Con, Complex-Con, and Star Wars Celebration — said he sees several parallels between pop culture fans and sports fans. However, he noted, while events like New York Comic-Con have evolved to embrace multiple difference fanbases and communities, the sports-focused event space is "ready to be disrupted a bit." Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli and Peyton Manning, Kevin Durant, Sabrina Ionescu and Hulk Hogan are just some of the big sports names scheduled to appear, Fensterman said. "Those are the moments that we get excited about, and we just don't see it being done anywhere else in the world of live sports events," Fensterman said. The festival was the highest-grossing and most-attended fan event in WWE history, according to Fanatics.

Outfitting Closets When Fewer People Came Out of Them

On a Monday in early February, Michael Salem was contemplating some silicone breast enhancers at a booth inside the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Midtown Manhattan. A section of the venue had recently been taken over by Curve New York, a lingerie trade show. The fake breasts were from Nood, a so-called solutionwear brand that, according to promotional material, offers products intended “to make all women feel seen.” With a soft feminine design, the enhancers were a modern and more subtle version of the ponderous breast forms Mr. Salem has sold for decades as a merchant who has catered largely to men who identify as cross-dressers and wear women’s clothing. After examining the enhancers, Mr. Salem, an 82-year-old with a booming voice and a penchant for self-promotion, began giving a Nood representative unsolicited advice about how to attract customers like his. The company should make its enhancers even bigger, he said, and add nipples to their smooth surfaces.

Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney speaks during the Anti-Defamation League's "Never is Now" summit at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., November 10, 2022. In media interviews, Cheney said she was considering running for president next year as a third-party conservative candidate or on a bipartisan ticket that would include both a Republican and a Democrat. She cited Trump as a threat to democracy and the United States. She has kept her focus on the former president, echoing Biden in saying that another Trump presidency would threaten American democratic institutions. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to carry out reprisals against those he perceives to have wronged him if elected again.

A 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST all-electric pickup truck on display at the International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York on April 13, 2022. Tight inventory and sky-high prices have kept interested truck buyers on the sidelines, but as the market cools, shoppers are coming across better deals. Pickup trucks have larger fuel tanks, allowing these vehicles to have longer ranges. Additionally, pickup trucks are beneficial for the work many people do in these areas, such as farming, ranching and energy production. Thus, owning a pickup truck can be key in regions with lots of heavy-duty, hands-on work, Waatti said.

Seven Standouts From the New York Design Festival

NYCxDesign, a design festival held each May in New York City, wrapped up its 11th edition last week with a strong array of group shows across boroughs — in Soho showrooms, artist studios and backyards in Brooklyn, vacant office spaces in Chinatown and galleries in between. Though officially billed as a weeklong festival beginning May 19 and anchored by the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and WantedDesign at the Javits Center, the event circuit seemed to begin in earnest a week before, with a packed roster of adjacent art and design fairs in town — including The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF), Frieze New York and the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). Below are a few highlights from this year’s edition. Heavy Metals

Striking Hollywood Writers Disrupt TV’s Major Ad Event

Other major media companies — including Fox, Disney and Warner Bros. Still, media executives have been anxiously awaiting the fallout from the prospect of hundreds of writers assembling on picket lines. Negotiations between the major Hollywood studios and the Writers Guild of America, the union that represents the writers, broke down on May 1, and 11,500 writers for television and film immediately went on strike. But the writers are not just demonstrating outside the major studios. They have gone far afield as well, setting up pickets outside productions in Maplewood, N.J., Chicago and Philadelphia.
Ben Savage speaks onstage at the Boy Meets World 25th Anniversary Reunion panel during New York Comic Con 2018 at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on October 5, 2018 in New York City. Savage, 42, filed paperwork in January with the Federal Election Commission to run in the 30th Congressional District as a Democrat. The district Savage seeks covers a chunk of LA that includes Hollywood, Burbank and Glendale and is home to major players in the entertainment industry such as Disney Studios and ABC Studios. The biography on Savage's campaign website touches on his experiences in the entertainment industry as a child actor, though it does not specifically mention "Boy Meets World," the show that made him a household name for a generation of Americans. Savage is the younger brother of Fred Savage, who starred in another coming-of-age TV series, "The Wonder Years."
New York mayor ending COVID vaccine mandate for city workers

[1/2] New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., November 10, 2022. REUTERS/Jeenah MoonFeb 6 (Reuters) - New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday that he was lifting a controversial COVID-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers and the city's Department of Education employees. Adams noted that since more than 96% of the city's workers have taken the COVID vaccine "this is the right moment for this decision." The decision comes four months after New York ended a COVID vaccine mandate for private employers, and 10 months after the mayor lifted vaccine requirements for professional athletes and performers. The union representing New York City's 36,000 police officers, which has fought against the mandate in court, welcomed the mayor's decision, but said the "job is only half done."
That other person later became an FBI source in a criminal probe of foreign political lobbying, which McGonigal was supervising, authorities said. The former top FBI agent in New York for counterintelligence was arrested with an ex-Russian diplomat and charged with violating U.S. sanctions on Russia after he left the FBI by trying to help the oligarch Oleg Deripaska get off the sanctions list, federal prosecutors said Monday. McGonigal and Shestakov, 69, who also was arrested Saturday evening, are due to appear in court in Manhattan later Monday. McGonigal previously had investigated Deripaska, who made his fortune in Russia's aluminum industry, while at the FBI. McGonigal agreed to help, and told an FBI supervisor who worked for him that he wanted to recruit the Deripaska employee, the indictment says.
Sinema’s interests are no longer necessarily the Democrats’ best interests in the next Congress, and the 2024 Senate map became even more complicated for Democrats with Sinema’s decision. The Democrats who run against independent Sen. Angus King in Maine have not gained traction in recent elections. Having two people in the race who are going to caucus with the Democratic Party likely makes it more difficult for the Democrats to win. All that said, the Democrats already have a difficult map heading into 2024. With Sinema’s break from the Democratic party, the road is, if nothing else, curvier for Democrats.
Cosplayers dressed in Mandalorian armor and Black Widow pose for a photo during Day 4 of New York Comic Con 2021 at Jacob Javits Center on October 10, 2021 in New York City. (NEW YORK — New York Comic Con isn't quite what it was before the pandemic. But it's still a way off from the approximately 250,000 fans who attended the New York event in 2019. ReedPop, the company that owns New York Comic Con, is fine with being conservative two years after the coronavirus forced organizers to make the event entirely virtual. The virus is still around, so Covid masks will still be required at all times indoors this year, although fans won't need to present proof of vaccination.
