These commodity stocks could win big as China moves to boost its struggling real estate sector and economy, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley's team believe these measures display a heightened "sense of urgency" and signal that China is "taking deflation seriously." Against this backdrop, the firm sees a positive setup for metals and mining stocks that have underperformed the S & P 500 by 25 percentage points since May. Here are some of the names that could benefit from China's stimulus: Within the mining sector, Morgan Stanley names Freeport-McMoRan and Alcoa among its top picks, with shares up about 22% and 17%, respectively, this year. "We strongly believe the deal closes on its merits," Burritt said in an interview on CNBC's "Money Movers." "It strengthens national security, it strengthens economic security and it strengthens job security." CFIUS told Nippon that the sale could "lead to a reduction in domestic steel production capacity," according to a letter obtained by Reuters earlier this month. Trump, who reached a trade agreement with Beijing in 2019 that later expired, has not mentioned any potential deal with China during his campaign for the 2024 nomination. Two Japanese foreign ministry officials said they fear that Trump may be prepared to weaken U.S. support for nearby Taiwan in pursuit of a deal with China. A Trump aide told Reuters that no recent meetings have taken place between Trump and Japanese officials. "If he is going to cut a deal with China, Japan needs to try and get ahead of the curve and understand its potential role to support its interests in both the U.S. and in China," said Machida. Robert O'Brien, Trump's former national security adviser, also has connections with Japanese officials, two of the sources said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will host Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a state visit on April 10, with the goal of strengthening a critical alliance as the United States has sought to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region. John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, told reporters aboard Air Force One that the visit will include a formal state dinner. As president, Biden has visited Japan twice, most recently going to the city of Hiroshima last May for the Group of 7 summit among major industrialized nations. Kirby declined to say whether the government's review of that potential merger would be a subject at the state visit. He said that Biden and Kishida will likely discuss a range of issues in Asia, including how to improve cooperation with South Korea.

Glencore will pay $6.9 billion for a 77% stake in Teck's coal unit, while Japan's Nippon Steel (5401.T) will pay $1.7 billion and swap its interest in one of Teck's coal operations for 20% of the coal business, the report said, citing sources. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Glencore and Teck were in advanced talks on a deal that would value Teck's coal assets at close to $10 billion. Glencore and Nippon Steel declined to comment. The Vancouver-based company has twice rejected an unsolicited $22.5 billion bid for the entire company from Glencore. The company in July said it had received offers from "various" interested parties for its coal business.

It was unclear what stake JFE was seeking or what price it was offering. Japan's Nippon Steel (5401.T) has previously said it was looking to buy a 10% stake in Teck's coal business for C$1.15 billion, valuing the overall business at about C$11.5 billion, with an option of increasing its stake to 17.5%. Glencore has said it will consider buying the coal business for about $8.5 billion. JFE Steel holds 15% equity in India's JSW Steel (JSTL.NS), which was also exploring an investment in Teck's coal business. Price said the company had two options -- a 100% sale of the coal business for cash or a partial sale of the coal business, with proceeds going to growing the copper business.

Feb 9 (Reuters) - Japan's top steelmaker Nippon Steel Corp (5401.T) on Thursday posted a 2% increase in April-December net profit to 517 billion yen ($4 billion) and said it would pay a record-high full-year dividend of 180 yen per share. Nippon Steel, which kept its full-year net profit forecast unchanged at 670 billion yen, paid an annual dividend of 160 yen per share last year. The company raised its full-year underlying business profit forecast by 60 billion yen to 690 billion yen, as it expects its non-consolidated steel output to be 200,000 tonnes higher than estimated in its previous forecast released in November. As Nippon Steel expands in lower-emission business including carbon capture and storage, it plans to issue a green bond on the Japanese market to co-finance production of electrical steel sheets used in eco-friendly car motors, it said. The size and maturity of the bond are yet to be announced and the issue itself may come in March or later, Nippon Steel added.

NEW DELHI, Nov 21 (Reuters) - India's Essar Group has become debt-free, having settled the remainder of its $25 billion debt after the sale of two ports and a power plant to ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel Ltd (AM/NS), the group said on Monday. Essar, built by brothers Shashi and Ravi Ruia, has sold some of its assets in sectors such as telecom, oil refining and steel over the years to settle its $25 billion debt. "Essar has concluded its asset monetisation programme and completed the debt repayment of $25 billion effectively making the group debt-free from Indian banks and financial institutions," Prashant Ruia, director, Essar Capital, said in a statement. AM/NS, which agreed to buy some infrastructure assets from Essar group for $2.4 billion, in a statement said that the ports and the power plant are captive to its India's operations and are expected to generate operation synergies for the company. Acquisition of these assets will help move raw materials and finished goods between the company's manufacturing facilities in western, eastern and southern India.
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker is tugged towards a thermal power station in Futtsu, east of Tokyo, Japan November 13, 2017. The global LNG market has more than doubled in size since 2011, ushering in dozens of new entrants and the expansion of smaller players in Asia. The capital needed to trade the market soared after benchmark LNG prices rose from record lows below $2 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) in 2020 to highs of $57 in August. LNG spot prices price stood at $40.50/mmBtu then. 'DIFFICULT TO COMPETE'High LNG cargo prices are also widening energy poverty globally as some cargoes, initially destined for poorer nations, end up being diverted to European buyers.
