Athletes Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves have been selected as the Team USA flag bearers for the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The 2024 Games in Paris will mark his fifth Paralympics as he previously competed in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, 2012 London Paralympic Games, 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Ahead of the Paris Paralympic Games, Team USA shared a video on Instagram of Serio, 36, taking a trip down memory lane as he revisited his headshots for past Games. The Team USA Instagram account shared a photo of Nieves posing alongside some of her USA women’s sitting volleyball teammates on Thursday. The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games begins with its opening ceremony on Aug. 28 and will end on Sept. 8.

CNN —Dutch golfer Joost Luiten will not be competing in this month’s Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee ruled it would not expand the field to include him, despite qualifying and winning a court case that seemed set to send him to Paris. Luiten announced last month that the Dutch Olympic Committee would not allow him to take a place on the country’s team that is competing in the golf competition, despite the fact that he met the International Golf Federation’s criteria for entry. The International Golf Federation said in a statement that the spot Luiten had earned had been given to another player because of the Dutch Olympic Committee’s original decision to exclude him from competing. According to the International Golf Federation, Luiten had finished 40th in the final men’s Olympic Golf Ranking. CNN —Canadian world champion pole vaulter Shawn Barber has died at the age of 29, his agent Paul Doyle told CNN on Thursday. Barber set the Canadian world record for the men’s pole vault in January 2016. Shawn Barber competed in the men's pole vault final at the 2015 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing. His best vault was 6 meters, which is still the Canadian record, according to Olympics.com. Barber is survived by his brother David, his mother Ann and his father George, according to the University of Akron’s statement.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — For the first time in 11 years, Katie Ledecky has lost a 400-meter freestyle race in an American pool. Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh took the title at the U.S. Open championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Thursday, beating Ledecky by nearly 3 seconds. McIntosh took the title in a meet record of 3 minutes, 59.42 seconds, while Ledecky touched next in 4:02.38. Ledecky’s last loss in the 400 free in her home country was at the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials, when she placed third at age 15. Ledecky took gold in the event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
