CNN —House Republicans are flirting with the idea of forcing a government shutdown over the issue of noncitizens voting in US elections. “We have a number of states who have done audits of their voter rolls and found thousands of noncitizens on their voter rolls. Johnson also later referenced Texas as a state where undocumented immigrants have tried to register to vote. “There are a number of states who have shown they have noncitizens on their voter rolls. In 2019, a review of voter rolls in the state seemed to suggest 95,000 noncitizens were on the rolls.

The private rocket company SpaceX has switched where it is incorporated to Texas from Delaware, its founder, Elon Musk, said on Wednesday, weeks after a Delaware judge voided his pay package at Tesla, another company he owns. A spokeswoman for Ms. Nelson’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mr. Musk, a billionaire who lives in Texas and also runs the carmaker Tesla, has had issues with Delaware. Last month, a judge there voided the pay package that had helped to make him the world’s wealthiest person. The judge ultimately ruled that Mr. Musk had effectively overseen his own compensation plan, valued at more than $50 billion last month, with the help of compliant board members.

Greg Abbott signed a law this year that removed Harris County's elections administrator and transferred the responsibility to other local officials. Democrats who lead Harris County have acknowledged issues, including limited paper ballot shortages and machine malfunctions, on Election Day last year. Republicans cheered the findings as justification for the new laws that transferred election oversight. Another new law signed by Abbott earlier this year clears the way for Nelson's office to potentially take oversight of Harris County elections. Following the 2020 election, Texas also audited elections in Harris and three other counties, which came after former President Donald Trump falsely claimed the election was stolen and pressured Abbott to review ballots.

Alabama's top elections official is withdrawing the state from a nonprofit known as ERIC. Founded in 2012, ERIC began as a collaboration by election officials in seven states, four of them Republican. A powerful outlierOfficials, including Republicans, have credited the organization with helping clean up their voter lists and prevent fraudulent votes. A former state legislator, Allen was dubbed an "election denier" by the States United Democracy Center, a bipartisan group that promotes election integrity, over his support for overturning the results of the 2020 election. With or without Alabama, he said, ERIC will continue to focus on "improving the accuracy of America's voter rolls and increasing access to voter registration for all eligible citizens."
