After all, we are so used to seeing older men playing action heroes with all the verve and pep of younger men. The original “Speed,” which was directed by Jan de Bont, came out in 1994 and grossed about $350 million worldwide. Let’s pretend “Speed 2: Cruise Control” (1997) never happened — the movie was a flop, and Reeves wasn’t even in it. Older female actors in action roles often feel disposable and replaceable. But there’s something satisfying about seeing familiar characters age in exciting ways — and about seeing an older woman kick ass.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Panama's legislature first agreed a contract extension with Canadian mining company First Quantum and it's local subsidiary, Minera Panama, in March. Eight lawsuits were also filed with Panama's Supreme Court arguing it was unconstitutional. Critics warned using a new law to revoke the contract could leave the government liable to legal action from Minera Panama. Earlier in the day nurses marched to the Supreme Court building to demand judges prioritize the constitutionality lawsuits. The mine is “in the middle of a jungle,” according to Minera Panama’s own contractor, Jan De Nu Group.

CNN —Glaciers in East Antarctica could lose ice faster in the future than previously thought, scientists reported Friday, in an alarming feedback loop where glacier meltwater is triggering even more ice loss and sea level rise as the planet warms. Together, these and other recent studies paint a dire picture of a melting southern continent that poses extreme risk of life-altering sea level rise around the world. Friday’s study factored that feedback into simulations to see how much it could accelerate Antarctic melting and sea level rise. Measuring this phenomenon and accounting for it in climate models is necessary “to get a realistic picture of global sea level rise,” Greenbaum said. “Given this evidence, subglacial melt and discharge is a process that can no longer be ignored in future projections of Antarctica’s contribution to sea level rise,” De Rydt told CNN.

The sea in the Dogger Bank Offshore Development Zone is up to 63 meters deep, meaning the Voltaire's ability to work in deeper waters is crucial. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday said his iron fist had consigned the idea of a separate ethnic Armenian Karabakh to history and that now the region would live in "paradise" as part of Azerbaijan. Hikmet Hajiyev, foreign policy adviser to Azerbaijan's president, told Reuters in a television interview that Baku envisaged an amnesty for those Karabakh fighters who gave up their weapons. Karabakh Armenian rights would be respected as part of their integration into Azerbaijan, he said, adding that they had requested humanitarian support as well as oil and gasoline supplies. THE HAGUE, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Armenia told judges at the World Court on Monday that a blockade of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region by neighbouring Azerbaijan was designed to allow "ethnic cleansing", a claim rejected by Baku. Monday's hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), also known as the World Court, was called to hear an Armenian request for the court to order Azerbaijan to lift the blockade. "Such blatant acts of ethnic cleansing have no place in the modern era and this court is the last hope for the ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh," Kirakosyan said. Mammadov also said that Armenia's claims of ethnic cleansing were "distorting reality deliberately" and were "fanning the flames" of conflict. On Tuesday the ICJ will hear a competing demand from Azerbaijan for the court to order Armenia to stop planting landmines in territories it once occupied.

Turcia se declară aliatul azerilor, pe care îi consideră parte a poporului turc, acordându-le ajutor tehnic (drone, în special) și trimițindu-le „consultanți”. Rusia, de cealaltă parte, le vinde armament și armenilor, și azerilor. În prezent, Carabahul de Munte este de facto parte a Armeniei, deși formal nici măcar Erevanul nu i-a recunoscut independența, căci aceasta ar însemna rescrierea frontierelor și război inevitabil cu Azerbaijanul (și Turcia). Ea are nevoie de transnistreni ca pârghie geopolitică și, dacă renunță să mai întrețină separatismul transnistrean, acesta se epuizează în câteva luni.

Preşedintele azer Ilham Aliev a salutat o „capitulare” a Armeniei.
