Trump transition watchPresident-elect Donald Trump is continuing the process of building out his administration, tapping allies for key posts. DeSantis does not have to listen to Trump, after the two men saw their relationship fray amid DeSantis' national rise and his failed 2024 presidential campaign. “I think that pick makes a lot of sense, and would be great for Florida,” said a Trump ally who acknowledged there is interest from Trump world in seeing DeSantis appoint Lara Trump. "I have heard that too," a DeSantis ally said of Lara Trump getting in the mix for the Senate appointment. Two DeSantis advisers told NBC News that it is very unlikely DeSantis would appoint himself, even though the option remains open. “She would avoid a really nasty primary in two years.”“I’m giving her my full backing” she continued of Lara Trump, who is a North Carolina resident.

But now, as Trump lines up against DeSantis in a battle over a high-profile ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Florida, the governor’s old ally, Jeff Roe, is working against him. The relationship, however, soured after DeSantis’ presidential ambitions went up in flames. In June, a Fox News survey found that 66% of Florida voters were for marijuana legalization while just 32% were against it — and that came before Trump said he would support the marijuana initiative. So whenever you’re going against that much money, it’s obviously a tough fight.”Jeff Roe led Never Back Down, the main super PAC backing DeSantis' presidential primary bid. “It’s obviously a different opinion than [DeSantis] has.”Other prominent DeSantis supporters are also in potentially difficult political positions.

Fox held separate pre-Iowa town halls for DeSantis and Haley, but at 6 p.m. before prime time. Frustration boiled over when DeSantis' campaign manager, James Uthmeier, felt that a Fox graphic didn't show the extent of the candidate's appearances in Iowa. Asked by Ainsley Earhardt if she would withdraw if she lost New Hampshire, Haley said she would not. “I don't care how much y'all want to coronate Donald Trump,” Haley said. “I don't need any advice from RINO Kayleigh McEnany on Fox,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referencing the conservative slur Republican in Name Only.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.

Struggling to energize his campaign, DeSantis this week privately encouraged his donor network to support a newly formed super PAC that's taking over advertising responsibilities. The super PAC has also paid for the bulk of his TV ads and almost all of his organizing. On Aug. 8, the DeSantis campaign announced a staff shakeup, replacing its campaign manager and hiring Polyansky from the super PAC to serve as deputy campaign manager. Polyansky is an Iowa campaign veteran who has worked on several presidential campaigns in the state. DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo said it was “totally false” to assert that DeSantis coordinated any campaign strategy with the super PAC.

The memo, shared with The Associated Press, pointed to Reynolds' surprise endorsement — a rarity for sitting Iowa governors before the caucuses — as proof that DeSantis could cut into Trump's margins. In her own memo, Haley campaign manager Betsy Ankney on Monday described the Iowa contest as a “dead heat” between DeSantis and Haley, while ignoring Trump's massive lead. He has no end game.”The new DeSantis memo points to the political infrastructure that he and an allied super PAC have established across several early voting states. In Iowa, the memo claims “there will soon be 50 dedicated paid staff" and the organizing help of Reynolds, who has her own statewide operation. But learning of Reynolds’ support for DeSantis Sunday did nothing to move her toward him, she said Monday.

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Bolstered by an infusion of new cash, Republican candidate Ron DeSantis’ presidential bid is diverting more resources to Iowa, including relocating key members of his team there, his campaign said on Wednesday. The moves reflect the crucial role Iowa, the state with the first Republican nominating contest on Jan. 15, plays for DeSantis. The Florida governor's campaign has essentially made it a win-or-bust state because he badly trails Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in opinion polls in Iowa and elsewhere. The DeSantis campaign on Wednesday reported raising $15 million during the third quarter, although not all of those funds will be available for use during the Republican primary. His campaign is planning to relocate about one-third of its staff, including aides who handle strategy and communications, to Iowa for the stretch run before the contest, the campaign said.

CNN —The 2024 GOP presidential debate stage is shrinking after the Republican National Committee announced late Monday that seven candidates are set to participate in the second debate – down one from their first clash. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination, is skipping the event. To qualify for the second debate, GOP candidates had to register at least 3% in two national polls or one national poll and two polls from separate early voting states – Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Nevada. Ramaswamy was a dominant figure at the first debate, engaging in memorable clashes with Pence, Christie and Haley.

Chris Christie in the eye of a political hurricane. It's a striking difference from a year ago, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, when DeSantis joined Biden on his tour of the state. But DeSantis' hurricane leadership has reflected positively on him in the past. The DeSantis campaign, grounded in Tallahassee this week, signaled that it sees such opportunities. Christina Pushaw, DeSantis' combative rapid response director, shared on social media Friday a Wall Street Journal editorial headlined "Hurricane Ron DeSantis."

Mr. DeSantis is in the midst of rebooting a presidential campaign. On Saturday, Mr. DeSantis frequently slowed down the pace of a parade in Londonderry, N.H., by stopping to shake hands with onlookers and pose for selfies. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a Republican who has clashed with Mr. Trump, said of Mr. DeSantis after the two governors met briefly at the parade. Mr. Trump appears to be skipping the debate, handing Mr. DeSantis an opportunity to take the spotlight. But the former president’s absence also means Mr. DeSantis, as the stand-in front-runner, will most likely come under withering fire from rival candidates.

Ron DeSantis is prepared to be “the center of attacks” next week at the GOP’s first debate in the 2024 presidential race, according to a campaign memo obtained by CNN that lays out how DeSantis is preparing for the debate stage. The memo, sent by new campaign manager James Uthmeier to donors and supporters, argues the Republican primary is a “two-man race” between DeSantis and former President Donald Trump, who is not expected to participate in the debate. The campaign is “fully prepared” to be “on the receiving end of false, desperate charges from other candidates and the legacy media,” the memo states. On Sunday, Ken Cuccinelli, the founder of the Never Back Down super PAC, said it was a mistake to post the memo. DeSantis told CNN Saturday that “you got to be ready for everything” on the debate stage.

DeSantis' camp on Tuesday announced that it was ousting campaign manager Generra Peck and bringing in two top outside strategists. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday completed the full-scale reboot of his once-promising presidential campaign, reassigning his campaign manager and elevating a loyal hand from his governor's office. James Uthmeier, DeSantis' chief of staff in Tallahassee, will now lead his campaign, news first reported by The Messenger. Ms. Peck, who will stay on as the campaign’s chief strategist, had drawn heavy criticism from Mr. DeSantis’s allies and donors after heavy spending led to a fund-raising shortfall. In response, the campaign had to lay off more than a third of its staff and start holding smaller events — a leaner operation more suited to a candidate who is trailing well behind Mr. Trump. Still, the successive rounds of changes have been an enduring distraction for Mr. DeSantis’s campaign. In 2022, Ms. Peck, 36, oversaw Mr. DeSantis’s overwhelming re-election as governor, making herself an invaluable confidante to the governor and his wife, Casey. Mr. Uthmeier, a member of the Federalist Society, the conservative legal group, served as general counsel to the governor and in the Trump administration.

Ron DeSantis keeps hiring people to lead his campaign who have no national campaign experience. Ron DeSantis keeps putting rookies in charge as he attempts to take control of his sinking campaign. When DeSantis launched his presidential campaign in May 2023, he chose trusted ally Generra Peck as his campaign manager. The inexperience at the top may have hurt DeSantis' presidential ambitions. As his campaign continues to circle the drain, it would make sense for DeSantis to replace Peck with someone with ample experience working on presidential campaigns.
