James Chance, the singer, saxophonist and composer who melded punk, funk and free jazz into bristling dance music as the leader of the Contortions, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. His brother, David Siegfried, said Mr. Chance had been in declining health for years and succumbed to complications of gastrointestinal disease at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in East Harlem. Contortions songs like “I Can’t Stand Myself” and “Throw Me Away” filled the rhythmic structures of James Brown’s funk with angular, dissonant riffs, to be topped by Mr. Chance’s yelping, blurting, screaming vocals and his trilling, squawking alto saxophone. He was a live wire onstage, with his own twitchy versions of moves adapted from Brown, Mick Jagger and his punk contemporaries.

CNN —Just over a year after a snowplow accident nearly ended his life, Jeremy Renner is jumping, kicking and feeling good in a new Super Bowl ad. They have a stunt guy there ready to do some of this stuff,” Renner told CNN in an interview this week. “It’s like there’s no way I’m gonna be able to do this. “Ultimately, that’s what the commercial is representing is to feel good and that I feel good and the song I’m singing is ‘I Feel Good,’” he said. “I was inspired a lot by my family and by all the different milestones in my recovery,” Renner said.

Gardening Is Hard Work. Music Can Help.

Stoked by the energy of Brown and Green, my garden took root some 35 years ago. It was James and Al who accompanied me throughout its formative stages, always there as I wielded a boombox and case of cassettes alongside my long-handled shovel and loppers. What is a garden, really, but a real-life version of the hit track from James Brown’s 1970 “Sex Machine” album, pulsing with the actual birds and bees? This is motivational music at its best. Brown and Green kept me moving — if not dancing, exactly — shod in my first pair of proper gardening boots, which were, serendipitously, brown and green.

Somebody wanted him dead.”After Hollander visited the DA’s office in 2020, prosecutors agreed to check out her story. “Don’t employees from the DA’s office have to sign a log when they handle evidence?” a reporter wrote to Geary. This came about after the items were shipped to her.”Legal counsel Don Geary has since left the Fulton DA’s office. CNN emailed Deputy District Attorney Jeff DiSantis, the DA’s spokesman, to ask about Hollander’s lawsuit and the missing potential evidence. In a recent phone interview with CNN, Hollander called for Willis to account for the missing items from the evidence bags.

On the line was a woman who told me, “James Brown did not die the way they said he died. James Brown, one of the greatest entertainers in American history, died at a hospital in Atlanta in 2006, officially of natural causes. Jacque Hollander's call to Thomas Lake spurred CNN's investigation into James Brown's death. "The James Brown Mystery" is a new, eight-episode investigative podcast from CNN. She’s still convinced that someone murdered James Brown, and that someone murdered Adrienne Brown, and that the killers should be prosecuted.
