Before Dr. Kevin O’Connor was appointed White House physician at the beginning of the Biden administration, he discussed a business venture with the president’s brother James Biden, but the doctor ultimately received no compensation, Mr. Biden’s lawyer said. The discussions revolved around James Biden’s involvement with a health care company called Americore, which was looking to expand a network of hospitals in underserved rural areas of the United States. Republicans have seized on the episode to suggest that Dr. O’Connor might have had incentive to minimize issues related to President Biden’s health. The White House rejected the speculation, with a spokesman calling it “ridiculous and insulting.”In his current role, Dr. O’Connor produced letters each of the three years following Mr. Biden’s physicals that attested the president was healthy and “fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.” The assessments have come under renewed scrutiny in recent weeks as Mr. Biden’s decline has become more apparent, particularly after his feeble performance in last month’s debate against former President Donald J. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

House Republicans on Wednesday urged the Justice Department to charge Hunter and James Biden, the president’s son and brother, with making false statements to Congress in the impeachment inquiry against President Biden. The chairmen of three House committees recommended the action in a criminal referral sent less than a week after the conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on 34 felony counts in New York. Their allegations, which assert that both men made false statements to Congress about President Biden’s involvement in his family’s business dealings, appear to include misrepresentations of Hunter Biden’s testimony. They also accused Hunter Biden of perjury. The referrals carry no force of law, but House Republicans are hoping to influence the Justice Department, particularly if Mr. Trump takes it over, to carry out more prosecutions of the Biden family.

James Biden walked lawmakers through the process of receiving two interest free loans from his brother Joe Biden, who at the time was a private citizen, and how he paid those loans back, according to a transcript of the interview shared publicly Friday. “I repaid two loans that I secured from my brother,” James Biden said. Then on January 12, 2018, Joe Biden loaned his brother $200,000 via Monzack, and James Biden repaid him on March 1 of that year, he confirmed. The wire transfers from Joe Biden and James Biden’s loan repayments ran through an attorney trust account controlled by Monzack. But, James Biden said there were no official documents memorializing these wire transfers.

U.S. President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden talks to reporters outside the U.S. Capitol on December 13, 2023 in Washington, DC. Hunter Biden will appear a week after James Biden, the president's brother, told lawmakers that at no point during his 50-year business career was Joe Biden involved in his work. Joe Biden attended dinners, spoke on speakerphone, showed up to meetings, and had coffee with his son's foreign business associates. Republicans first issued a subpoena to Hunter Biden in early November, but through his lawyer, he chose not to comply with it for months. Hunter Biden will repeat what he and other witnesses have previously told the committees, that his father was not involved in his business, the sources said.

When a young Joe Biden embarked on his first political campaign more than 50 years ago, it was his brother Jimmy who dropped out of college and crisscrossed the country to raise money for his bid. Months later, when Joe Biden’s wife and 13-month-old daughter were killed in a car crash, it fell to Jimmy to go to the hospital to identify their bodies. And as Joe Biden built his political profile, it was Jimmy who took his brother’s two surviving children under his wing, forming a particularly strong bond with the younger one, Hunter, with whom he shared much in common. That relationship eventually morphed into a business partnership that would bring millions of dollars from overseas deals to both men — and has now thrust them under the scrutiny of the congressional Republicans who are bent on impeaching President Biden. On Wednesday, James Biden, known in the family as “Uncle Jimmy,” testified to the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees leading the impeachment inquiry that his business ventures were above board, that his older brother was not involved in them and never did anything wrong, and that, if anything, it was the elder Mr. Biden who helped him out financially — not the other way around.

WASHINGTON (AP) — James Biden will appear before House Republicans for a private interview next month as lawmakers seek to regain some momentum in their monthslong impeachment inquiry into his brother, President Joe Biden. James Biden's interview will take place just days before the president's son Hunter Biden will be deposed in private by the Republican-run committee, which has been investigating the Biden family's overseas finances for the past year. The committee found records of two loans that were made when Joe Biden was not in office or a candidate for president. In nearly every interview the witnesses have stated that they have seen no evidence that Joe Biden was directly involved in his son or brother's business ventures. House Republicans have shifted their focus, for now, on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

House Republicans interviewed a former business associate of Hunter and James Biden on Thursday who told Congress ahead of the interview he had “no contact” with President Joe Biden, according to a letter obtained by CNN. “He never heard mention of President Biden with respect to any of the transactions pursued by Hudson West III and is unaware of any involvement President Biden may have had with his son’s business pursuits,” Dayananda added. As a result, Dayananda wrote, “Mr. He has had no professional contact or communication with President Biden at any time,” Dayananda wrote in May to Comer. But Greene said she had a tougher time connecting with Speaker Mike Johnson, who doesn’t have a strong relationship with the congresswoman. “I haven’t heard much from him,” Greene told CNN earlier this week. Greene said Johnson heard her out and gave her assurances that her impeachment articles would move through committee and on to the floor. Taking a page from his predecessor’s playbook, Johnson has tried to dole out commitments and face-time to some of his potential critics. GOP Rep. Bob Good of Virginia said the Freedom Caucus made clear to the speaker on Thursday what their expectations are.

The House Oversight Committee investigating Biden family business dealings has issued subpoenas to Hunter and James Biden to appear for depositions. Also requested for transcribed interviews are family members and associates including Sara and Hallie Biden. In a rush of rule-breaking at the end of a meeting, Mr. Durbin moved to bluster through subpoenas for two friends of Supreme Court Justices on a partisan vote. This is part of a Democratic political campaign to portray the High Court as a trinket bought by billionaires. “The pair have become genuine friends, according to people who know both men,” as even the left-leaning ProPublica admitted.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans demanded Friday that Hunter Biden appear this month for a closed-door deposition, rejecting his offer to testify publicly while pledging to release a transcript of the private interview for transparency. House Oversight Committee chair James Comer and Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan reiterated the parameters of the subpoena issued last month to Hunter Biden in a letter — obtained by The Associated Press — to his attorney. The president’s son refused their request this week for closed-door testimony, saying it could be manipulated. The early-November subpoenas to Hunter Biden and others were the inquiry’s most aggressive steps yet, testing the reach of congressional oversight powers. Republicans have so far failed to uncover evidence directly implicating President Joe Biden in any wrongdoing.

The Democratic president's son slammed the inquiry as a “fishing expedition” and refused to give closed-door testimony but said he would "answer any pertinent and relevant question” in front of the House Oversight Committee next month, setting up a potential high-stakes face-off. Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, subpoenaed Hunter Biden in early November in the inquiry's most aggressive step yet and one that tests the reach of congressional oversight powers. So far, Republicans have failed to uncover evidence directly implicating President Biden in any wrongdoing. The subpoena demanded Hunter Biden appear before the Oversight Committee for a deposition by mid-December. Hunter Biden is now charged with three firearms felonies related to the 2018 purchase of a gun during a period he has acknowledged being addicted to drugs.

Hunter Biden faces allegations that he traded on the family name. Photo: Jonathan Ernst/ReutersHouse Republicans subpoenaed Hunter and James Biden on Wednesday, demanding their testimony as lawmakers seek to tie President Biden to his family’s business dealings. The subpoenas to the president’s son and brother came as Republicans pushed to rekindle an impeachment inquiry that faced delays during the jockeying to select a new House speaker, a race that exposed fissures within the GOP conference. In the buildup to Wednesday’s subpoenas, lawmakers focused a spotlight on Hunter and James Biden as they alleged that the president’s relatives traded on the family name as they made millions of dollars.

Requests for comment from Hunter Biden and James Biden were not immediately returned. House Republicans on Wednesday issued subpoenas to Hunter and James Biden — President Joe Biden's son and brother, respectively — as well as a Biden family associate, Rob Walker, in an escalation of Republicans' impeachment inquiry into the president. A representative and attorney for Hunter Biden and James Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The subpoenas and interview requests come a day after the special counsel overseeing the probe into Hunter Biden testified before the House Judiciary Committee behind closed doors. The panel further alleges that the Biden family, their business associates and their companies received more than $24 million from foreign nations over approximately five years. "These records reveal how the Bidens sold Joe Biden around to the world to benefit the Biden family, including Joe Biden himself, to the detriment of U.S. interests," Comer said in the statement.
