The first Republican presidential primary debate is slated for Aug. 23 in Milwaukee. Twelve candidates have entered the race to date, but some are unlikely to make the stage for the first debate. To participate, candidates must meet a mix of fundraising and polling criteria set by the Republican National Committee. They must also pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee.

As candidates for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination make their candidacies official, the contours of the campaign are taking shape. The GOP field includes Donald Trump, who jumped into the race immediately after the 2022 midterms, along with former Trump allies such as former Vice President Mike Pence and those increasingly critical of the former president.

What Is the Debt Ceiling and How Does It Work?
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( James Benedict | Adrienne Tong | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
House Republicans passed a bill proposing to raise the nation’s $31.4 trillion borrowing limit in exchange for deep cuts in government spending. But with President Biden’s reluctance to make cuts, the bill faces an uncertain future in the Democratic-controlled Senate. Congress must raise the debt ceiling before the government runs out of money to pay its bills, which could happen as soon as June. S&P reduced the U.S.’s credit rating when Congress came close to not extending the limit in 2011. This downgrade increased the Treasury’s borrowing cost by about $1.3 billion in the fiscal year, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Silicon Valley Bank’s Meltdown Visualized

Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse was the second-biggest bank failure in U.S. history in terms of assets. Deposits at the tech-focused lender’s parent, SVB Financial Group , had declined in three consecutive quarters and the situation worsened on March 9 when clients tried to withdraw $42 billion. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took control of the bank, creating a new entity it called the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara. All of the bank’s deposits have been transferred to the new bank, the regulator said.

The 2008 financial crisis led to more spending with less tax revenue. The U.S. national debt has increased by more than $8 trillion dollars since late January 2020, pushing the total debt over $31 trillion, according to the Treasury Department. The national debt is the accumulation of all past deficits plus the interest owed on the resulting debt.
Many Republicans managed to run ahead of former President Donald Trump’s 2020 performance in their districts. The shift in voter preferences can be seen in those districts that most directly reflect the national mood. The partisan voter index, or PVI, compares the vote in each congressional district with that of the nation, based on the past two presidential elections. For example, Mr. Trump’s average share of the vote in 2016 and 2020 was 49% in Michigan’s 8th congressional district. That is one point better than his average share of the vote nationally across those two elections, giving the district a PVI of R+1.
It’s the kind of rapid-fire trading you see on Wall Street: hundreds of stock-market wagers, sometimes peppered with options and other aggressive trades. But this wasn’t done by ordinary traders. The transactions came from about seven dozen senior federal-government officials who disclosed that they or their families each made more than 500 trades from 2016 through 2021. That totals more than 80,000 transactions while these officials worked in government.
