After the coup, the United States paused certain foreign assistance programs for Niger and military training has been on hold. "The leaders of this attempted coup are putting Niger's security at risk, creating a potential vacuum that terrorist groups or other malign groups may exploit," the official said. The United States has been pressing for a diplomatic resolution of the crisis that erupted on July 26 when Niger military officers seized power, deposed President Mohamed Bazoum and placed him under house arrest. Military juntas have come to power through coups in Mali and Burkina Faso - both neighbors of Niger - in recent years. But so far, Paris has rejected calls by the coup leaders to withdraw their 1,500 troops.

Zeci de oameni au fost ucişi într-un atac jihadist în oraşul Palma din nordul Mozambicului, au anunţat duminică responsabili ai forţelor de apărare şi securitate din ţara din sud-estul Africii. Provincia Cabo Delgado, unde se află oraşul Palma, este din 2017 scena unei rebeliuni islamiste, asociate cu gruparea Stat Islamic. Oficialul citat nu a specificat numele grupării implicate în atac, care nu a fost revendicat. Sunt primele informaţii mai clare despre victimele atacului, survenit într-o zonă unde comunicaţiile sunt precare. Forţele franceze l-au ucis pe Bah ag Moussa, un lider militar important al filialei nord-africane a reţelei teroriste Al-Qaida, în timpul unei operaţiuni desfăşurate în nord-estul statului Mali, a anunţat vineri ministrul francez al forţelor armate Florence Parly, potrivit Reuters, informează Agerpres. „Figură istorică a mişcării jihadiste din Sahel, Bah ag Moussa este considerat responsabil pentru câteva atacuri împotriva forţelor maliene şi internaţionale”, a menţionat Parly într-o declaraţie. Bah ag Moussa, care se afla pe lista teroriştilor urmăriţi de SUA, a fost lichidat marţi într-o operaţiune la care au participat trupe la sol elicoptere şi survine unei serii de misiuni în care forţele franceze au ucis zeci de combatanţi islamişti în ultimele săptămâni. „Acesta este un succes major în lupta împotriva terorismului”, a adăugat Florence Parly.
